My Planned Modificiation, 2009 FC 23FB

I'm contemplating modifying our 23FB later this year, and I'm wondering if any 23FB owners have done similar.



When we were shopping for Airstreams, I looked at a number of floor plans in the 23-27 lengths, and ended up with the 23 FB for a few reasons: full size bedroom, bath/shower 'way' down the hall, lots of storage, bit easier tow, all combined with the relatively decent price I got for the unit.

Downside to the 23FB floor plan, as others have noted, is lack of seating, particularly when you wish to entertain.

As a result, I plan to modify the bedroom of our 23FB, removing the queen bed, and installing a wraparound couch from wardrobe to wardrobe, possibly with a table in the centre of the U for dining. The U-couch would of course become a Queen-King bed at night. I'll likely re-floor the bedroom area with floating cork flooring, which I have left over from an earlier home renovation.

I don't see a lot of difficulties doing this modification, with the exception of possible discomfort caused by gaps in the couch pillow 'mattress' (and of course cost and personal labour).

I'd be very interested in suggestions on this modification: downsides, difficulties, etc. If anyone has done a similar mod on their 23FB, I'd love to hear from you regarding your experiences.

I would say a significant downside would be the loss of storage under the bed.

Bedding, linens, etc. would still be stored beneath the U-couch. I think the storage loss might be fairly small. But something to keep in mind.

We also have a 23FB. That sounds like a very workable idea. Do you plan to use the two long sides of the U-shaped couch as two twin beds, or fill in the center with a cushion and make the whole room one giant bed?

Brian, the initial plan is for one large bed (it would be between Q and K), though two singles would work as well. The curb side bed might end up slightly shorter than ideal. I'll have to draw it all up to see what is feasible in that regard ...

Fortunately, SuEllyn is fairly short (5'4") and might just make it on that curb side twin bed. We could always remove the top drawer under the short wardrobe, cut through the wall and make more leg room.

A big advantage of twin beds would be no gaps in the mattress, and quick-easy setup at night! A possible sleeping arrangement would be one person road side and one person front. I'll get the measurements and post as my plans mature.
