Before we bought the trailer the PO had to replace both the tires on the right side , and when we went to pick it up both the left side tires were splitting open while sitting in his driveway.

We cobbled up enough tires to get it home , I then ordered a set of nice 15 inch 0 offset trailer wheels . Bought a set of 235/75R15 Cooper trendsetter tires and mounted and balanced them myself.

The bigger tires fit perfectly in the wheel wells and has much extra space for any amount of travel that could ever come from suspension movement. The extra height makes dragging the rear less likely too.

The light weight per axle on these trailers makes it extremely simple to find tires that will safely carry the load and provide more cushion by having less air pressure in the tires.

We just got back from an eleven thousand mile journey up through the United States , Canada , and all over the state of Alaska. The cooper tires performed flawlessly and look the same as when we first left.
I would sure recommend the switch on any two axle Airstream that came with 14 inch wheels.
Regards

Hi Danny,

Thank you so much for your insight and personal experience on this 14" tire issue. With all of the input that I received on this matter, We have about decided that we are going to make the switch to 15" wheels and LT tires.

Danny, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide me with the exact specifications on the wheels and tires that you are using, and the vendors from whom you got them. This would save me some 'shopping around' time.

Brian

Thank you for the offer, but unfortunately, the 15" wheels that I would need for the 23FB would have to have a five bolt pattern. If I am not mistaken, the 15" wheels on a 27FB have a six bolt pattern.

Everyone has been so forthcoming on this 23FB wheel/tire situation. Thank you everybody for your thoughts and input.

As we move toward this changeover to a 23FB, we would greatly appreciate any additional input or suggestions on making the most out of our 23FB.

Brian

In the 23FB, we are going to the single door 5 cubic foot refrigerator from the two door 7 cubic foot refer. We notice that the smaller refer does not have any external temperature controls. Do these unit work pretty well?

Yes, for us... We move the refrigerator's thermister probe up and down to maintain the right temperature monitored by our AcuRite Refrigerator/Freezer Wireless Digital Thermometer.

More information: Cool... and wireless

We have one of those 5 ft control-less ice boxs in our 22 ft Safari , it keeps the frozen stuff frozen and the other stuff cold . Had qualms about it at first ,but it seems to do just fine running on gas while traveling or boondocking , or just as well when running on 110 volt .

Beside getting a 50 Watt solar system I also have the dealer install a switch on the fan for the refrigerator condenser without any additional cost. The refrigerator we have work quite well, have not tried it in above 100 deg. temperature yet.
Good luck on your New Lucy. Our RVing style is very semilar to your's never stayed in one place for more than couple of days except when visiting the relatives.
What we loved most about the 23FB is walk around bed, shorter, narrower, bathroom arrangement and the capacity of fresh water tank is same as larger one. So far we have driven over 10K miles looking forward to go to Alaska next summer.
Congratulations

Thanks, everybody, for all the 5 cubic foot refrigerator information. I just ordered one of the AcuRite Refrigerator Thermometers. I now feel better about the smaller refrigerator.

I have a new question about the 23FB. In the real camping world, what does your 23FB weigh, ready to go camping?

I checked the Cooper web site; The Trendsetter tire is classified as a "entry level "economy passenger tire. The weight is 2028#. What about the sidewall stability? Is this a heavy enough tire for trailer application?
I have a FC FB 25 and have been looking at Cooper tires, but??
Danny and Brian keep us posted.

We just got back from an 11,000 mile adventure across the United States and Canada to Alaska and back with our little 22 ft 2 axle Safari . I did not splurge for Michelins this time but put a set of Cooper 235/75R15s P rated tires on it .These were 70 bucks a pop at Discount tire, and I mounted and balanced them myself.
On this trip we encountered just about every road condition and surface that there is on this planet. As well as making a great many tight U-turns on paved and gravel surfaces "side drag on the trailer tires" and again scooting across Texas in the August heat at 70 plus MPH, these low cost Non ST tires performed just as well as the Michelins. No flats , no problems whatsoever .
I had previously "back when the speed limit was 55 " run a set of the cheapest 235/75R15 inch general tires that Sams club sold then for about 35 bucks a piece on my 66 24 ft Land Yacht with exactly the same results. No problem whatsoever . We traveled mostly in the heat of the hot Texas summers .
I use the P rated tires mainly because the load rating is more than sufficient and the fact they have a lot more flexibility to absorb variations in the road surface ,small objects pot holes etc, without transmitting the movement to the axle and trailer while running at a much lower air pressure.

The amount of travel in a trailers suspension is so very tiny when compared to the suspension travel of trucks and cars , I like to give it a bit more cushion that these P rated tires offer . And have never encountered any problem at all in crosswinds , sharp turns , etc. due to the much softer sidewalls.
Just Me .

Brian,
Normal camping load for our 23FB, with gear, provisions, full propane, full potable water and empty waste tanks is 5673 lbs. 2592 on front axle, 2296 on rear and 785 on tongue (unhitched).

Joe,

Thank you for this information. We'll probably be packing about the same for the road. I'll be using the Hensley Arrow form Old Lucy. That will add another hundred or so pounds. Even with that, I'll be running about 1,600# less than we did with the 25FB.

We have spent the last several days emptying and depersonalizing Old Lucy. We are amazed at how much stuff we had been carrying around for the last eight years. Many of the tools and accessories that were in Old Lucy had never been used. There were even some things that we swear that we had never seen before. Someone must have snuck them in and hid them.

We are now in the fourth day of this unloading process, and we are not done yet. We have decided that only about half of this stuff is going to make to New Lucy.

The process continues.

Brian, I wondered why your reported weights were so much higher than that of my 28 footer!

If you are referring to the 25FB's running weight of 7,400#, this is an actual weight on a truck scale. We have weighed Lucy twice over the years, and the weight was virtually the same each time.
