Extended Warranty?? Worth it?
My wife and I are taking delivery of our new 2014 27' FC. The dealer is offering an extended warranty, for quite a bit of money.
So I am curious if others have an opinion on the value of an extended warranty. The cost of of the warranty ranges from $2400 for 4 years up to $4900 for 7 years. Seems like a lot of money for coverage of a product that is built to the quality level Airstreams are.
Before I plunk down another wad of dough I am very interested in what other owners think.
Thanks. And forgive me if this post is not done correctly... this is my first post to the Air Forums!!

The bottom line: No!
The top line: Welcome to AirForums, Jim. There are a lot of opinions on this subject, such as in the thread, " Do I want to get the 5 years extended warranty dealer offered?".
And for more opinions, use the search engine in the advanced mode, especially searching the sub-forum, " Dollars & Cents".
Ditto the post below!

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your new Airstream.
I agree with the "no" answer.

Welcome, we are in the same boat as you and have decided not to purchase the warranty. Our '15 is coming in Sept. My advice, put the 3-4K in a bank account and let it sit....if you need it, it's there, if you don't, it's still there

Anybody out there have issues after the 2 year factory warranty and have actually used the extended warranty to cover their costs?

Unlike a car, the trailer has no complex mechanical part like an engine, fuel sysyem, or transmission to fail. Most expensive worst case, fridge or AC? I assume because you are buying an RV you are somewhat independent, capable, and willing of doing your own repairs otherwise you'd just travel to resorts and hotels, if at all. Extended warranties are a huge profit item for dealerships. I have always declined and am tens of thousands ahead as a result.

I've found most of the devices covered by extended warranty will fail within the first year of use if defective, after that they are usually good for the long run. The extended warranty providers know this as well.

Extended Warranties on pretty much anything, not just Airstreams, are rarely a good deal. They are just another way for an appliance, automotive, RV, camera, whatever, dealer to add PROFIT to the deal.
If somebody can make money gambling on the process why can't you? It can be called self-insurance.
Not talked about when you buy a warranty package is the small type you usually find when you may come to make a claim.

I completely agree that is not a good way to spend hard earned money, but I did it anyway. We bought Coach-net for 5 years. Hope we don't need it.

I agree. I never buy extended warranties except for high end laptop computers.

Well... how do you all REALLY feel? :-)
I really appreciate the overwhelming response. I know the direction I will head now, well at least as far as the Extended Warranty, I still have NO idea which actual direction I will head, which is kind of the beauty of all of this.
Thanks again everyone!

I not sure that you are aware of Consumer Reports stand on extended warranties.....a resounding do-not-buy. They suggest self insurance. Pay yourself for the extended warranty coverage with an investment or savings.

An exception I should state is for any APPLE product. The cost for an AppleCare package is very small and the always easily accessible Service is fantastic, probably the best in the world....

I completely agree!
I am writing this on my MacBook Pro laptop computer that I bought in January, 2008, along with Apple's 3-year extended warranty. I love my MacBook Pro and Apple's extended warranty!
During the extended warranty period, Apple replaced my keyboard, mother board, and there was the time when an ant crawled in and was seen walking under my display screen and was terminated there. Apple Genius Bar had a great time hearing my story and authorized the replacement of the display case! (They said the deteriorating dead ant might have negative consequences to my display screen!)

Sergei,
Interesting you mention that. I forgot I got an extended warranty from Apple for a MBP and glad I did. Cheap insurance, you are right. And as it turned out I did use it and glad I had it.

When you fill out all the warranty cards and send them in, Dometic will offer an extended warranty for the AC and refrigerator. Skip those too.

Normally I would never pay for an extended Warranty of any kind. Its like saying your banking betting on the product to fail. I just got a new Airstream a few months ago and they were offering a Lifetime Warranty as part of the deal. Im sure I paid for it someplace but it looked better not seeing it listed...and its a lifetime Warranty not just a few extra years. The only requirement is for me once a year to take my AS to a Qualifed RV dealer and have them check 4 items they have listed. I found one here local and its not an airstream dealer and the checks cost about $100.00. These are also things I would most likely do anyway. We will see...

Looking for an updated assessment on is a 5-year warranty worth it
Alright folks... We are getting ready to pick up our 2023 Classic next Saturday. That puts us in the paperwork and financing mode. I've read posts on warrantees before, but here's what AS is offering as their warranty package: 1-year bumper-to-bumper full coverage; 3-year warranty on shell, windows, etc. only. 5-year bumper-to-bumper for a whopping $6,774! Over the past year I have read of lots of issues that Classic/Airstream owners have had. In your assessment, especially as Classic owners, would you buy the warranty? Love to hear from you. Thanks so much!!
