Isn't that true of most bike racks that are mounted to the rear or front of a vehicle?

Yes, it is. And I don't put bicycles in either of those locations for the same reason.

When I saw comments regarding a cover to protect bicycles on the rear of an Airstream I thought I'd add my two-cents. I wouldn't want one of us to spend $$$ on a rack and cover thinking they were doing a good thing when they may be creating a safety problem. One could make a case for a rack on the rear of an Airstream even though it partially blocks the lights. A covered bicycle on the back of an Airstream sounds like a recipe for problems.

Yep, you are right about a cover. Not a good idea.

It is a simple matter to mount two auxiliary taillights that are not obstructed by the bike rack if someone thought they were necessary. We use the Airstream rack and like it very much, the factory Airstream taillight visibility is fine. We don't use a cover because the bicycles do fine outdoors during travel and while in camp. The interior of our Airstream is for us.

I have looked into bike racks and all have their flaws. The best is the one sold is by Airstream, but it can block lights (with bikes attached), and hinder access to rear storage door along with emergency window on some models. Front mounts look good but will block front window and any flag setup that you might have and will increase tongue weight. Covers are not good when moving.
