Lucy made the 300+ mile trek from Santa Rosa Beach to Jacksonville. It rained off and on pretty much the whole way. The trip took a little longer than usual as it was slow going with the weather. Lucy is still performing well with no leaks detected. Lucy is tucked in at her home away from home in Jacksonville.

We have now towed New Lucy a little over 3,000 miles. Her road performance has been excellent. Almost all of the towing thus far has been done with Olivia, our 2005 3/4 ton Suburban. As this 3,000 miles have been in Florida, there have been no serious grades to contend with.

Brian,
Welcome to sunny Jacksonville.
Are you passing through or staying with family for a while?

Hi Fred,

Kind of both. We will be camped here until Thursday visiting family. Then we will go down to Orlando for a conference until the 21st. We will regrettably have to leave Lucy here as our work at the conference requires that we stay in the hotel. We will come back to Jacksonville and spend a few more days before heading back to Santa Rosa Beach.

Brian

Good Morning Brian.......I am still researching and evaluating this AS life style.......what is your AS trailer's gross weight (loaded)? I'm attempting to determine if a Toyota Tundra Truck would be the type of vehicle I would select to haul my future AS. I am seriously considering a Flying Cloud 27"......

Thank you for your time.

Here's a discussion about Tundra by people who tow with them.

I haven't weighed New Lucy yet, but Old Lucy, our 2005 Safari 25FB, weighed 7,400# ready to camp. I an guessing that New Lucy will go about the same. A fully loaded 27FB would weigh only slightly more.

As to your question about the Tundra, it would probably do just fine, depending on you expectations. We have towed extensively with two different 3/4 ton Suburbans, an '04 and an '05. They both did very well with the Airstreams, but did labor on significant grades. It was a little slow and the upgrades, and sometimes concerning on the downgrades.

In 2011, we added a 3500 Duramax to our fleet. We went to the Duramax to carry our Outfitter pop-up truck camper while pulling the Airstream. Even with the 3,200# truck camper in the bed of the truck, the Duramax's performance is simply outstanding in all aspects. Extreme road grades (both up and down) are of absolutely no concern to the Duramax. It has spoiled us. It is true that the Diesel costs more to buy, more to run, and more to maintain. As we tow as much as we do, this is a luxury that we are willing to pay for.

All of this perception is not my imagination. We still have the 2005 Suburban 2500 that we use to tow the Airstream in the winter season. The gas Suburban still does well in Florida, but the Duramax excels in all areas of towing. It's like night and day by comparison.

Brian, I'm a bit confused when you say you had a bit of problem with the 3/4 'Burb on the downgrades. I've got a 2013 3/4 and use the trailering power assist all the time, and have no difficulty. Have to hit the assist button twice to disable the downhill braking, but that does the trick. Could you elaborate?

I see where you had an 04 and 05 and maybe you didn't have that feature in those years.

Hi Murrey. I have had three 3/4 ton Suburbans, an '01, an '04, and the '05 that I still have. None of these have the trailering power assist feature that you are describing. It must be a feature of more recent years as I am not familiar with it.

My down hill experience with the Suburbans is that if the grade is steep enough and long enough, I have gotten into that "runaway train" feeling where even shifting to a lower gear is not quite enough to make me feel comfortable.

Also keep in mind that my Suburbans were all four speed transmissions. I'm sure the newer six speeds do a better job.

Brian, the newer Suburbans have the Trailering aAssist Feature built in to the shift lever, on the end in the form of a push button. Push it once and the feature is activated, push it twice and the downhill braking system is DEactivated. Pretty straight forward.

From your description of the steep uphill grades (which I haven't had this rig to Colorado, yet) is bothersome. I would think the earlier versions of the 3/4 would be more powerful.

We go down into Arkansas and the Boston Mountains all the time with no uphill difficulty, but the Bostons are little brothers to the Rockies, to say the least.

Time will tell.

Brian,
Another Thank You for your input.
Suzanne, Bailey and I are going to pick up Feather next Friday the 23rd. Guess what, already sold the original tires and wheels using your $600 price no problem and will be picked up at the dealer.
I'm already a happy camper and haven't even been on the road.
Thank You,
Fred

Hi Fred. I'm glad that things are working out for you. We would love to see some pictures of Feather when you get her.

Even though there are some new features on Lucy that I think should have been left alone, there is one new feature that I really like. The new locking catches on the outside storage compartment doors are a vast improvement. I am finding that they operate better that the old ones. I have found that I can leave them unlocked while underway. They do not vibrate loose. this simplifies the camp making process.

Not to hijack the thread, but I used my 2014 Tundra to haul my 25', now it is pulling my 30' 2015 International. There are quite a few others using a Toyota Tundra to haul the longer models. But there could be an entire forum just on tow vehicles, gas vs. diesel, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, etc........
