2012 FC Range Fan/Vent Blows Fuse

We've been living full time in our new 2012 Flying Cloud for 3 months now. We haven't moved the trailer in 3 weeks. Suddenly, now when I turn on the fan over the stove it blows the fuse every time. Anyone have ideas why? Otherwise I think we'll have to add this to our repair list for the dealer.

Sounds like a short has developed. Perhaps a wire came loose or rubbed on something or is pinched between metal pieces. The latter could continue to cut through the insulation even if the trailer is not moving.

Hi, this is along shot, but maybe something got into the fan wheel and won't let it turn.

Some even longer shots.

Is the outside vent door free to open? Check the list on the fuse box cover to see if something else on that circuit is drawing too much current, and the fan then overloads the circuit. Is the battery or converter voltage under 12 vdc? Is the correct size fuse installed (never install a larger one)?

Hello- I'm having a similar issue with my vent hood on my 2012 FC. Were you able to troubleshoot and fix?

It ended up getting fixed by the dealer.

2012 Hood blowing fuses

I have had my new 2012 since May and have blown 4 fuses. It is currently at the dealer in Pismo Beach for repair. They couldn't get it to blow but they got the approval from AS to replace the motor. It seems to only blow fuses when hooked to shore power so..I am a little suspicious that it may be related to the converter power or potential electrical spikes rippling through the converter. I get the trailer back in a few days so...I guess I will find out if the motor was the problem.

And what exactly did they do?

The Italian manufacture of the hood was alerted that their hoods were blowing fuses and determined that the fuse could be incremented to a 5A from a 3A. This came directly from Airstream so...it should be ok and safe. I also learned that high voltages or spikes cannot occur with the converter as the battery is downstream hence ripples are unlikely.

It would be nice to have a running list of these known issues. Save a lot of aggravation. Why would Airstream not let us know the fuse needs to be upgraded???

I just saw your question today! I'm not sure what they did to fix it, but it's been fine ever since.

I'm a real fan of the Airstream brand, but it's a bit of a bummer how many repairs we've had done in the last 2 1/2 years:

On our 2012 FC that was blowing fuses on the stove hood. AS replaced the motor and that didn't work, then AS got approval to insert larger fuse. That did work. Have not had a problem since. I don't remember what the fuse size was as they were sent to me from AS.

Had the same problem with our 2012 FC. Called Airstream and they said the manufacturer of the range hood put the wrong size fuse in the system (3 amp). Replace it with a 5 amp fuse. Did that and the range fan has been running over a year with no problems. Note: before the fuse replacement, sometimes the fan would run but the fan and range light was a sure fuse popper. Since the replacement everything works together.

Although our fuse never blew, I recently replaced the bulbs with LED lights. Draws less current thus less chance for fuse blowing.

We had the same problem on our trailer. My husband replaced the fuse with a five amp as others did and no more problem.

The fuse is dedicated to the fan so you will need to replace it. It is behind the hood filter on the right. It is Bussmann 5 Amp Time Delay GDC-5A. Got mine at Ace. Seems like every outing I am looking for something. Last time it was the sink sprayer not shutting off. Went to all the RV supply stores and finally found one from Lowes that I made work.

Our vent fan was a chronic fuse blower even after switching to the larger fuse. Like several times a day! Airstream replaced the unit and we have had no recurrence of the issue. Sometimes it is simply a bad part....

Based on this thread I decided to get some spare fuses, although I could not even read the numbers on the existing fuse. After 3 auto supply places and no luck I went to Radio Shack. Success! These things are 5x20 mm fuses???? Why would anyone use something other than an automotive fuse in a 12vdc RV application???

Metric products

The range hood is made in a metric country (Italy) so I'm not surprised that it has a metric size fuse--though I would certainly prefer a common US size fuse. And I don't know if the yacht/boat market tends to be metric, or not.

According to AS tech support, the manufacturer has approved using 5 amp mini fuse.

I've had the same problem, but haven't been out since calling AS.

Stands to reason, the 5 amp will take care of the issue.
