Although here it may have indeed been a HOT "water heater" if left empty with the electric element on?

Or am I getting into hot water . . . ?

Ha! Now that you mention it... not sure why I call it that. At a minimum I should be calling it a cold water heater.

I can deal with "hot water heater", a phrase from the Department of Redundancy Department, but "VIN number" drives me crazy.

But is there always fire where there's smoke?

consider this

You may have a problem with the shore/park power supply. Maybe a problem with the pedestal supply has cooked your heat pump. I bought a surge protector that has a diagnostic read out that always plugs into the campground pedestal first to make sure the power supply is up to standard, no mis-wired connections, open ground, etc. once I get the correct readings I plug my AS into the surge protector. I lock the protector to the pedestal with a chain since it cost $300 but it gives me great peace of mind. Also if there is a brief power failure while the heatpump or AC is on it will not allow power to the units for about 8 minutes, so that the compressor can reset.

HJ ,

You should read the thread before posting. The problem was stated to be in the water heater and had nothing to do with either the heat p pump or shore power supply.

The Airstream Dealer couldn't find anything wrong or replicate the issue that caused the smoker detectors to activate.
Best guess - once I detached the city water supply but left the hot water heater on (electricity) that caused the smell and odor.
Thanks for all the replies! Hopefully this will be my only Rookie mistake!!!

I doubt the water heater would cause a problem if there was water in it. It is pretty hard to completely drain it.

My rookie mistake was hooking up the hose to the black tank clean out instead of the fresh water hookup. My my was that a learning curve!

Heat Pump is part of the AC and does not require water, so will assume you mean electric hot water heater. Disconnecting water supply from the trailer should have no effect on the hot water heater, unless you are USING hot water, with it turned ON, after you remove the water supply. This would probably burn out its heating element.

Thanks for the update!

Interesting to read the entire thread again and marvel over how the symptoms and diagnosis wandered a bit . . .
