Generator for A/C on Intl. 19, 2013 recommendations.

Hi folks,

Back in the Airstream club with the purchase this week of a 2013 Intl. 19.
I have a GMC 4x4 2015 with 5.2l tow vehicle. Will pick it up next week from private seller.

Now, on trips, I want to be able to pull into a rest stop, fire up a generator placed in the bed of the GMC, fire up the A/C and take a 1/2 hour nap, or just fix lunch.

Thus, I ask for guidance on how to setup a generator to allow this with the least hassle and cost yet a quiet configuration specifically for the volume of a 19' Intl.

I do not foresee using it for overnight runs of the generator, but one never knows so should have that as an option as well.

A lot depends on the size of your ac unit. If it's an 11000 you might be able to use a single 2000 Honda, if not then 2 2000 Hondas in parallel might be in order or a 3000 unit.

Briggs and Stratton have come out with 2 different RV generators to take on the Honda brand. I bought the 3000 Watt size for running my AC unit. It's about 900$ cheaper than the Honda unit of the same size.
So far I am very pleased with my purchase.

The 2013 Intl. 19 has a 13,500 BTU A/C in it, according to what I can find on the net for specs.

As such, just how man sustained amps/watts do I need to "take a nap"?

I see the B&S gen has just 110 outlets. Thus key is 110 volts but output in Amps is essential to get correct to have the AC function?

Need full 35 amps?

I researched this very same question two years ago after purchasing my 20' FC, and the answer was the Yamaha 2400 watt generator. It will drive a 13,500 BTU AC.

...but I didn't buy one! I have a Toyota Tacoma with a shallow bed, and the tall handles on the Yamaha didn't fit under my bed cover. I literally carried the generator off the showroom floor with the salesman and told him it had to fit in order for me to buy it.

So I decided to go the 2x Honda 2000 route. No sooner than I bought the first generator, my Dometic AC unit failed - and after only 4 years' use - so I decided to hold off on the 2nd Honda 2000 until I had an AC to power with it.

During my search for an AC I discovered that Atwood makes an AC that is efficient enough to be powered by ONE Honda 2000, so I went that route and I'm very happy with the results.

Nevertheless... measure carefully, and if the Yamaha fits, go for it.

I have used 2 2000 Honda's running together for years, they work great.

Just using Amazon as a reference for you to buy.

2 x Yamaha Gens
1 x Twin Cable to make it 30amps
2 x Gen Cover
2 x Magnetic Dip Stick
1 x Extended Run tank
1 x Extended Run tank cap adapter

This should get you going.

With the exception of the extended run tank, I have this very exact setup. Works great.

If you plan on keeping it on your TV, then get a single gen that does 30amps.

Hi, long story, but I'll tell some of it. I bought a Yamaha 2400 because it was the smallest, lightest, single generator that would run my air conditioner. I also made my own generator inlet system on the front of my trailer for the purpose of running my generator from the bed of my truck. I also made a way to secure my generator in the bed of my truck. I have a roll top bed cover that can be locked in any position. My plan was to open the bed cover so the generator could get air for cooling and a way for the exhaust to get out. Thinking that I had all bases covered, we took a cross country trip. When I first needed the air conditioner, the exhaust was too hot for the truck bed so I shut it off and looked for a full hook up camp ground. I later made a turned up exhaust extension, but the connector failed. I now finally have all systems perfected and I'm confident that my Yamaha 2400, mounted in my truck bed, with my roll top cover partially opened, will work as per my design through my home made generator inlet without a transfer switch.

To those who use 2 2000 watt Hondas - Is it necessary to run both at full power, or will the AC cycle up & run with the Eco-Throttle switches turned on?
