This bike rack has been discussed many times. I have one that was installed by the dealer. It is rock solid and stillows access to the storage area. If you do it yourself and then make it fit by adjusting supports you should not be surprised when it fails. The rack is fine, it was how it was mounted.
If I had very expensive bikes or ones that I was sentimentally attached to I probably would put them under a cap. These things do ride outside.
