Reading your post reminds me of my similar post a few years back. I finally retire mid-June 2017 and look forward to getting out on the road. I will have owned the Airstream five years in a few short months and I am comfortable towing and dealing with minor issues. I had an extra work year added to my original retirement plan but it is almost over.

I will share in just my brief vacation-like travels that many people have been helpful. Some have run over to help me back in as soon as I arrive without asking. I have been a few places wishing for company but raised an only child, I am quick to find activity. Like you I have yet to explore the solo camper groups and offerings. My first RV camping was 2005 in New Zealand where $18 a night was a lot to pay for full hook ups in a full-featured park- kitchen, theater, pool, etc. I did not look into campground costs here until after purchasing the Airstream. The costs are ridiculously high for a night of some water and electricity. It will definitely impact how and where I camp.

Recently retired and Airstreaming solo. As with anything anywhere you will always need to put safety first. I have recently joined this forum and read it everyday to learn more. I have been met with amazing generosity and extremely useful information. Lots of support here, you will not be alone. You will make new, interesting friends that you will have for life. I know I have. Looking forward to at least 5 years of full-timing and then what happens. Improvise, adapt and overcome. Every challenge is a chance to learn something new.

Welcome to the forum. I currently have an Airstream Interstate, (previously, a 16' Bambi sport). I travel solo with. A furry baby and me. I feel safer with my AI, as if I end up someplace and decide I don't like it, all I need do, is walk up front, get behind the wheel and go. (That is, if I am not hooked up.) usually, if just an overnight for sleep. I like my alone time, but, if I want company, not that hard to find.

I go it alone, mostly though not full-time- yet. I have always found that being comfortable single is the first thing. I've met people who have issues with single people trying to "figure me out" stereotypically. I say, just get to know the person. I met the nicest Airstream couple last year who walked their cat on a leash. That event, and the Airstreams were our initial talking points. I like to hear about people's travel adventures, etc. I haven't met too many single travelers but several nice people.

Rod, you are so right! One must like one's own company...learn to enjoy your alone time. No one can make us happy...we must do that for ourselves. I try to choose those folks who have the same confidence and a positive nature...no drama. If they are not available...no problem...Mikki and I like each other just fine.

i am a solo traveler and love it..one meets great people everywhere,i rely on the kindness of strangers,both the Safari sport and my dog (minature pincher)attract attention and wonderful encounters,and conversations result from it...singles tend to go towards other people more than couples who tend to stay together...i love pulling into a campground,setting up and walking around to meet other campers from all over,exchange tips,sharing information etc etc...its a great adventure...happy new year to all..M

I travel alone but also still working virtually with my agency. One thing about an Airstream...your gonna get noticed!! Every campground I have ever stayed in overnight always ends up with folks stopping by to ask about it and or make comments. Its very easy to meet your neighbors and just know that RV folks in general are always much friendlier that who you find at hotels.

I love to travel alone. Some of my friends find it strange. I just figure it makes them nervous because they can't imagine spending time alone with themselves!.

Others above are right on. Pulling into any campground with my 16 footer gets me noticed. I have no trouble meeting new people on the road.

I'm still working, so no full timing... yet! Although, I love the idea of it.

True. One time I was visiting Camp Wilderness and ended up being put in a tight squeeze site. Two guys, both with big families across the drive came to help me back and started talking to me as I set up. They were so interested in the "silver trailer". Later I was done setting up. They came over again and wanted to see inside. We talked a bit more. They were impressed with the simplicity. One of them had a fifth wheel and the other a large trailer with slides. They had several kids each so space was needed. They asked me if I wanted a beer (I don't drink) , etc and were friendly.

Speaking of drama Coloradolady, I don't mind too much. I seem to be a trouble magnet or perhaps perceived as a good listener. People often open up and I listen, ask questions and give advice if possible. I don't really mind. It is one way that I may be able to help someone me thinks as I am limited on my handyman skills- better than before as a "trailer-ite", but still limited.

I enjoy getting out alone in my Airstream...never have trouble meeting folks and striking up conversations. The Airstream seems to be a "magnet of curiosity" for other campers and they stroll over for a peek. Traveling alone gives you time to reflect, to slow done and enjoy the scenery, to journal, to plan and to enjoy. Oh....I guess I didn't mention that I don't actually travel completely alone.....my dog always comes along and he keeps me busy on the trips too.

I recently purchased 19' bambi international and am planning on doing most of my traveling alone. I've been widowed for about a year now and am looking forward to getting out to see the US and to make new friends.

My pup, Mattie is always with me for company.

I'm wondering if it is different for a man traveling alone vs a woman. I mean in terms of comfort levels??

Rick, my condolences on the loss of your wife. It seems that many of us travel single, alone, and maybe with a pup or two. I don't know that male vs female alone travel is much different, as far as comfort, our needs are pretty much the same. As far as safety, being aware of our surroundings, choosing where we camp or overnight carefully. A good tac light, marine air horn, taser, and a "couple of little friends" are always with me and make me feel safe. I chose my Interstate, "Goliath" for a safety and comfort upgrade. For an overnight, (no hookups) I feel confident that if surroundings don't feel safe all I need do is walk up front, get in driver seat and drive off, even if in pjs.

I find that after loss of my husband, kids grown, etc. to get away, travel, see our great nation, sunsets, sunrises.....soothes the heart and feeds the soul.

No difference....its just a matter of common sense...and relying on the kindness of strangers...if need be,not to hesitate to ask for help(like backing up in tricky situations)....its all good!!!!happy travels...

I have traveled alone for years. I was frightened sometimes at first, but it was one of the best things I ever chose to do. My confidence has grown immensely.

I am 33 so I still work and am younger. Dating is an issue, though I'm a bit of a loner type, not sure I will ever actually settle down with one person. I recommend animals as companions. I couldn't do it without my dog.

I am more shy and introverted. I am looking to get trailer to have a sort of"home" as I plan to keep traveling as it isn't how I earn my living. I actually think the trailer will help me meet people, other travelers who are looking to explore and are new to town with few connections.

I have been researching Airstreams with the plan to pull it with my 2016 Ford Expedition Limited. It has. 9200# limit for towing. Been looking at the 25-27' trailers. What is the recommendation for weight limit? Will be traveling alone with my dogs.

So glad I found this thread. I am researching airstreams now with hopes of purchasing in year or two. It will be me and my two dogs, I am thinking of 25FBTWIN for comfort and maybe occasionally others coming with me. I want to boondock too. Any advice is appreciated.

It can all be done, as many of us can tell you.

Be careful, but don't be afraid, is a good rule to follow.

We solo travelers are the minority, anywhere we go, but we're here and out there living our lives....widowed, divorced, single, men & women, in all shapes, sizes, ages and orientations.
