http://gearscience.co/renzetti-traveler-vise-review/
Gives a description of why you might want to spend the $s for a vise upgrade.
Planning on spending some time looking at technique to understand the issues a bit better when I visit the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton next month.
Thanks for the recomendation. Pat

Campgrounds near trout water
Lake Solano County Park is located next to Putah Creek off Sackett Lane and Pleasants Valley Road. This area is below Lake Berryessa, near Napa CA.
Friday is the start of the Pleasanton FF Show at the Alameda Fair Grounds.
Stay warm, dry and safe. Pat

Eastern Sierra Spots?
Hi, alll. I'm a new Airstreamer (22 sport) and mom to a 15 yo, avid-but-always-learning fly fisherman. We live north of Los Angeles in the High desert of SoCal.
He's turning 15 next week and I'd like to take him fishing somewhere along the Eastern Sierras where we can camp fairly close to fly fishing spots. Trip will be short so drycamping would work.
He will be a junior guide for a youth fly fishing camp in mid June fishing the Upper Owens but we are not opposed to heading there now, too. Just not sure of the snow shed conditons of the rivers there. Last year water was high and very fast which didn't make fir the best fishing
Would love any suggestions for this trip or others since I'm such a newbie.

This is the vise my son uses. Pretty much all his.mentors tie on this and have had them for 20 years plus. They encouraged me to buy something like this that will last forever.

Newbee too, so not much iron clad info.
However, CA has 10 rivers that are 12 month fishing venues. East Walker River, Hot Creek, Upper Owens River, Pit, North Fork Yuba, Truckee,
American, East Carson, Tuolumne River, East Fork Carson - expect all to be catch and release.
All are quite a bit North of you, so you have an opportunity to travel for sure. Current water information is often available from fishing reports provided by local fly fishing shops. That may help. A local fishing club often provides fishing reports from member trips and the fly fishing groups are often wide reaching.
There is a 395 thread currently running that may be of help.
Good Luck in your search. Pat

We'll be heading west for our annual trip to be in Boise for the Fly Fishers International Fair the first week of August (Sam is President of the Eastern Waters Council). I don't fish, but she's a guide in NY and a certified casting instructor. Except for the California sites, she can vouch for most of the other places mentioned. We'll be looking for all of you.

Ken Hanley presented "California Fishing by the month" tonight at the Diablo Fly Fishing Club meeting. Not the Eastern Sierras, but ----
May is Sacramento Valley Shad fishing. Fly is a wet pink in 2,4,6 hook & 7wt intermediate sinking tip - shallow wade close to shore in low light - deeper in high light - quit by noon
Go again in last hour of light - floating line & trout flies
The shad move out of the delta and up the lower Sac as the weather warms.
You likely have a trip planned now, but FYI in the future.
June is Socal Calico Bass - 8-9wt sinking line - work the kelp beds off shore 12-25 ft deep - if fish dive into deep kelp, release pressure so they think you have released - watch until line moves back out of kelp and then play the fish. Works for bass in snag areas too.
July is mountain trout everywhere - 5,6,7wt depending wind and habitat -
There is a bit more, but I'm betting the clubs in your area have similar local info. Seek and yee shall find good fishing all year round, somewhere. From bluegill to blue shark Ken says opportunity exists in CA throughout the year. Pat

This is great, thanks! We live part time in Mammoth Lakes, CA so spent last weekend there to celebrate his 15th bday. He fished McGee Creek, Hot Creek and Convict Creek (trout).
We are lucky that a few of the local guides have taken him under their wing ...because of that he got some good fishing in at a reservoir along the 395 on Sunday and caught some random stuff including carp, bass, cat, trout, blue gill. I'd tell you where this mysterious reservoir was, but I'm not allowed to know.

Winter project is a fly tying class. Will never attain the skill many have, but a lot of knowledge is being shared. Folks are quite helpful and the weekly projects are very interesting, even if they are just a tiny bit challenging for old fingers to accomplish. Pat
