I am a member of the WBCCI Amateur Radio Club and try to check in on nets when I am on the road. Have not been able to attend any of their rallies, but hope to do so in the future.
The nets are open to any radio amateur regardless of WBCCI membership or even trailer ownership.

Roger, my problem exactly! I usually sleep pretty good and, specially when it is cool (or cold) I don't mind staying in bed instead of sitting by my radio. We're in Florida for a while this winter so mornings aren't cold -- I'm getting up in time for second hour most mornings -- at least by 8:45 anyway. HI HI

I have been checking into the WBCCI ARC since 2010. The net controllers do a wonderful job and are always quite friendly. The ARC encourages me to be more active on the radio as I passed my exam in 2009.

Currently located in Rockport, TX and have been able to check into the East Coast and Rocky Mountain RV Service nets from this location. Using a new off-center fed 40M dipole about 12 ft. above ground. Works better than the ATAS-100 mobile antenna if propagation is good. Will be operating the club station WB8RC from Huron, SD this summer (June 25 to ?).

John/W9CJX, sounds good. I'm usually checking in on my G5RV dipole that's about 20' above the ground - but this time of year, 40m propagation for the early-bird check in (0630) on RM RV Service Net (7.184MHz) has not been cooperative lately. It gets better here at my QTH around 0730, however.
Look forward to hearing you check in sometime...

It is my intention to join and check out the east coast RV net after I pass the extra exam. I hope to get that out of the way in Dayton in May. I just got back on the air after a several-year hiatus, got a new-to-me Kenwood TS-850, and my husband just helped me get my ham antenna up and station working. I hope to meet you on the air soon!

I picked up a wonderful old Kenwood 450-SAT a couple of years ago at HamCation Orlando, hanging out with a large group of folks from WBCCI-ARC. What great radios! I get compliments on my audio without even asking for reports.
Why wait for your EXTRA? Join now aa a General (which affords you all the nets). When you earn your EXTRA ticket 54 days from now the club will automatically upgrade your member record and can also send you a congratulations. How cool would that be, to have 300 of us confratulating you?
Joining is easy -- don't put it off.

I did make it in on the net Saturday morning. I even got to relay in a California station that no one else could hear, or to talk too.
I'll blame it on my Ten-Tec rig, .
Still good to see an old technology working well.

How interesting..."on the air rallying". Not only can you meet in person at rallies...but can catch up on the air as well. I've been interested in this for years. What type of equipment is needed to get started? What are the nets? Are these units in your Airstreams or at home? Thanks!

An HF (high frequency) home station can be fairly simple or quite complex.
Cost is a lot lot an Airstream, it can be done on a budget or can cost thousands.
The first step is studying for and passing the tests. A general class license is required for all but the most basic HF privileges. A little web research will serve you better than a lengthy post here.
After that, and I do not intended to step on toes here, but HF radio does require a little practice and more radio understanding than the VHF and UHF bands. Operation on these bands can be accomplished well with off the shelf, buy it and hook it up equipment.
HF requires larger antennas, and a true understanding of antenna resonance to be a reliable system.
It is fun and quite satisfying to string up an antenna in the trees and make contacts from around globe.
The "nets" (short for network) are simply a roundtable type meeting with one person as the moderator. A station states his call sign, the moderator acknowledges him and adds him to a list of other stations. The stations wait their turn until called upon to add their comments.
Nets today are mostly an exchange of signal reports and weather at your location, with an occasional mention of activities and such.
In the days before the internet and cell phones, the nets were used to stay in contact with family during caravans and rallies.
The caravaner could leave his family the contact information of the net operators, phone or postal address, and then check in daily to see if any messages were waiting. The nets are held three times a day to take advantage of varying radio propagation. One may be able to make contact at noon, when he could not during the morning.
Again, all the mysteries of HF radio waves.
Study up, learn something new, and have fun.

Thanks JD...can anything be more expensive than owning an Airstream. Have been doing some research online and looking for local club. Not sure I'd know what to look for in a unit. Thanks again!

...you got that right, Jim. I'm preparing the AS for an upcoming trip to WY for the Antelope Rally. We'll be meeting Bud/NP2CT there. The prep includes re-mounting my IC-7000 from the Suburban into the AS. The High Sierra will be going up front on the A-Frame. I sure like your roof actuator! Maybe there will be one for me in the cards next year. I'm on the Rocky Mtn RV Net (7.184Mhz) as I write this. Heard you on the net several weeks ago. Okay Art. Hope you have great travels. and about the actuator, I heard from Ron at Scorpion about a new Breedlove tilt mount for mobiles is in the works. Bound to be cool!
Can't make ABQ this year, nor the Rocky Mountain RV Service Net rally. Drats!

Coming to Nova Scotia? Several IRLP repeaters in the province and most close to good campgrounds . And none of repeaters , 2 meters, require extra tones.

OK, after some extremely high levels of confusion by the dozens of adjustments on my FT8900, I have actually said something on air....working off the repeater in Sparta, NC, 145.430 MHz.

Yep. Yaesu radio menu systems can be 'interesting' in the Spockian sense. I'm supposed to know what I'm doing and I still scratch my head at times.
There are a series of aftermarket manuals made by "Nifty" that are easier to use and small and portable. I have one for all my rigs, since they are all a little different.
