There is also an outfit called "RT Systems" that makes computer driven programming software for lots of radios, plus reliable interconnect cables between a PC and the radio. Also makes it a lot easier to set up repeaters, etc. I've obtained the software and cables for all my 'modern' radios. My 'boat anchors' don't have programming ports, unfortunately.

A lot of this stuff can be obtained at Ham Radio Outlet. Also known as my favorite toy store.....😄

KM4LPO aka Tommie

Congratulations again, this time for getting your signal out and back, through a repeater no less. Not the easiest start for a noob, setting offset and tone along with all the other stuff.

+1 what Rich KE4GNK says about Nifty guides for specific model radios. Bought mine at Orlando HamCation years ago for FT-60r (handi talkie) and for FT-857. Still took me a long time figuring out the shortcuts I wanted for the 857, much like your 8900 but does HF/VHF/UHF and wide band receive. Nifty Guide is essential.

You can find them on line at niftyaccessories.com (unless they moved.)

Let's talk soon. We can reach Sparta easily starting Wednesday this week. We're still doing family and "city" errands in Kannapolis. Getting back to mountains Tuesday afternoon.

Best,

Yeah, between the vx-8 and the 857 being programming nightmares I tend to really like my go kit FT-450. The 857 is really compact on the head end but tough to operate without the nifty guide handy. Since the main unit is forward in the closet and the head is aft on the desk pre programming it is kind of necessary. If you like mil-spec programmable radios the 857 is 'fun'.

WBCCI Amateur Radio Club 50th anniversary

I have the programming disc, even bought a PC just to program the Yaesu. Now all I have to do is keep struggling to figure out how to access the stuff I have programmed....LOL

the j- pole is now mounted about twenty feet in the air out on my roof. It seems to work, but a lot of the folks chatting do not seem to acknowledge anyone trying to get in on the topic. Maybe I need to listen.

Wednesday might be a good time .... About 8:30 PM. What frequency?

Good evening KM4LPO,
I am VE9NKD Randy,
Have you been able to talk locally to another unit. Is your radio a HF or 2 Meter rig? I am guessing 2 meter with the J pole. Check that your pl tone is correct for the repeater and your offset is correct and in the right direction. I had tried a J pole with non satisfactory results. I ended going with a 5/8 wave PCTEL Maxrad 5800 antenna and had far superior reception.
Good Luck

Randy
