An unfortunate experience!

Has anybody seen or know of this trailer - I thought I had bought it!!

This was to have been my second purchase of an Airstream on Ebay, the first being an exceptionally good experience, (I am a private buyer not a dealer) and the guy I thought I had bought this one from seems to have done a runner with my Airstream and my money - he will not return emails or phone calls and his address now appears to be fictional.
As much as I still would like this trailer I am very keen this guy does not scam someone else.

I'm sorry you got ripped off. There are several threads here about a Bambi regularly involved in Ebay scams. Do you have any recourse through Ebay?

Did you use Pay Pal or something similar to pay for the trailer? I would think you would have some kind of recourse if you did. I would also contact the Attorney General and the DMV in the state where the trailer was (is) located. I hope you didn't pay the full amount.

Thank you both for your thoughts, both Ebay and Paypal claim the 45 day period has expired and seem to be very uninterested!
Right now we are trying to let as many people as possible know about this guy while letting the various authorities take their course.

Did it take you 45 days to find out if you got ripped off?

I have bought 2 trailers off ebay. I never send even the deposit. I get the cash and head out to see the trailer. When I see that it's what I bid on and can hook up to it, I turn over the cash. Any one selling a legitamate trailer will accept this arangement as I am usually there within 2 days.

I am some 4500 miles away in the UK - Turning up with cash in just a couple of days is not really an option. With my first purchase through Ebay having been so straight forward it possibly coloured my experience. The 45 day deadline was exceeded because the first shipment was cancelled by the shipping line - not the ebayer - and by the time the second shipment date came round we were past the 45 day mark and everything was so terribly plausible! In hindsight everything seems so obvious, sadly I guess thats how a good scam works, as I said above my main concern now is that he doesn't get to do this to someone else.

Sorry, didn't notice where you were from. Maybe in the future you could contact one of the inspectors listed on this site to check it out for you. I would certainly do it for you in southern Ontario.

Thumbs up Our ebay experiences...or not.

Both our 06 Burb TV,(07) and boat,(09) were on ebay, didn't sell, contacted the sellers and made arrangements for deposit and inspection.

Both purchases involved many lengthy phone conversations, with a lot of notes taken, many redundant questions, on my part, and just as many consistent answers from the sellers. It just felt right so we pulled the trigger.
Even with all the precautions taken the pick-up trips were filled with an excess of wonderment but both turned out very well.

Hope you are able to get some satisfaction from ebay or the seller....Good Luck

Bob

Never give any money up front on anything you have not seen. If necessary sign something that says you will buy it if it is as described. They are trying to sell something sight unseen. Let them take the risks. If it sounds too good to be true then it is. I would say you should be able to get some government agency involved in this. This is fraud and that is a crime.

Perry,
"Never give any money up front on anything you have not seen."

Not sure if that statement is true in all instances. A deposit agreement demonstrates to the seller a serious commitment. I used a deposit on both of our out-of-State purchases with good results.
In both cases the ebay ad's stated the sellers were the original owners, a quick call to the dealers involved confirmed, a BIG plus in both decisions.

I guess it really just boils down too..."buyer beware"

Bob

Have you contacted Visa? I'm not sure of the legalities of an overseas transaction but as long as you've made a good faith effort to obtain your purchase.... Visa typically allows a chargeback and then it is up to them to collect it from the seller.

Question

IMHO...PO box=first red light.

Not to be a smart ass but $6000.00 deserves a phone number and references.

I did not send my $500.00 deposit on either of our purchases until I had the sellers name, home address, phone# and Bank Branch.

Did the google thing on the address and spoke at length with both the seller and bank.

Well, you could start here... ask if they know him?
City of Cle Elum | Police

Any pics of his licience plate in the pics he sent?

Just looked up his ebay profile... looks like he did the same thing in June of this year... only 50% positive rating.

For future reference, you gotta research who you're buying from.. not everybody is on the up and up.

Sorry to say, I think you were took.

Here is his address:

John Gallagher
900 Harkness Rd
Cle Elum, WA 98922-8867

and a pic of his house:

I would contact:

Chief Scott Ferguson, Police Chief
sferguson@cityofcleelum.com
(509) 674-2991

Politely ask him if he would please run a unit over their to a) see if an airstream is present, b) have a word with John.

If it is present, I do believe I would find a way to have it towed off the property or impounded if possible.

I see there are several members on this forum that are about 90 minutes from this address. Perhaps one of them may be traveling thru the area and would take a look for you.

Finally, these folks would be interested also:

Kittitas County Prosecuting Attorney's Office
205 W 5th AVE Suite 213
Ellensburg WA 98926
509-962-7520
509-962-7022 fax

Good Luck!

That's a house? Looks like some sort of campground stand or something. I'd call the local police listed there in the last two posts....
