Wally boots arrived
Had to share my excitement about my recent purchase of Red Wing's Engineer boots. Red Wing developed the boot style in the 30's for men working on the railroad. Pee Wee shared a photo with me a while back that features a pair of boots that Wally had worn on many caravans and passed down to Pee Wee for the Capetown to Cairo trip.
In the spirit of Wally nostalgia I picked up a pair for this Spring's Rally season. The boots arrived yesterday and I am thrilled with the purchase. They are made in USA and are of excellent quality. I expect to get years of Airstreaming adventure out of them. Here are the photos....

"Engineer boots" were popular in the early '70's. They were a much lighter color leather (tan), had neoprene soles, were not particularly comfortable, but wore well. I used them for hiking in my first trip to Colorado in 1976; after that I bought real hiking boots.
They did not look like the boots in the first post or in the Wikipedia entry ( Engineer boots - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). Those look like they are a lot better quality boot.

I wore boots for years. Now the ones that fit me in the morning don't fit anymore at noon. I struggle to put them on and I absolutely can't get them off without a jack.

We visited the Red Wing Factory on the Mississippi River caravan two years ago. They make really good shoes that are durable. My farmer father in law wore them for years.

Girly Engineers
Gemma's got a pair of black Frye engineer boots. She wears them with frilly sundresses in the summer and with jeans and chaps when she's on the back of our 2003 Harley 100th Anniversary Road King.
We didn't know that Wally wore engineer boots. We like him even more, if that's even possible.

Really good question - I went to three different Red Wing stores here in NJ and came up empty in all cases. Seems the boots are part of Red Wings 'Heritage' collection which none of the RW stores carry. I was told to try Bloomies (no luck there - Frye only) or Bergdoff's - wasn't traveling to Fifth Avenue for a pair of boots - or online.
I wound up buying them at Zappo's. They shipped out (free shipping) of Louisville, KY and arrived three days later. Used my normal shoe size and they fit perfectly.

I always just order boots via a Red Wing store. My left has to have a .5" lift, so the factory produces and sends. (I much prefer factory produced lifts rather than aftermarket add-ons.)

When I waz a kid there were Wellington boots (for cool cats like me) and engineer boots for the guys and of course combat boots for the girls. I always liked the guys who wore engineer boots because they couldn't run fast enough to catch anybody. I hated recess at school because we didn't have play school like now, we had to play kittenball because we didn't have any playground equipment. It was either play ball, toss rocks, or hunt for pheasant eggz in the fence line weeds.
I played first base because I had the trapper glove. First base was the big tree by the road fence. The girls always hit those bouncing base hits right between the pitcher's legs and they'd come sliding into first wearing those combat boots. Man that hurt. I gotta go lay down.

Do you have a model number? The web site lists several models that look very similar.
