Vintage Airstream built for Southern Pacific Railroad

What a great line cabin for the gandy dancers.

For additional vintage photos and stories go to SNU at

One of these was on ebay about 9 months ago. It was ended before it sold, so no idea what ever happened to it. The seller described it as two trailers fused together so the crews could have their own space.

This must be one of 'em...
My grandpa was a station agent for the Rock Island Lines, but I never saw one of these babies around his workplace. My dad did derail an engine once and grandpa was none too happy about it!

Very cool indeed. I believe these were set up to ride a flatbed railroad car and travel with the train. Looks as though either direction the trailer was going, one of the doors was a suicide. Would love to know more about these unique beauties. Anymore pix or history anyone can add?

You can see more pictures of the Western Pacific RR Museum relic at The WPRM Airstream Overview photo gallery -|- Details photo gallery

There is an ongoing fundraising effort for a proper restoration. The idea is to get the trailer back to original condition and roadworthy so the museum could use it as a traveling exhibit. The SNU has received verbal commitments for parts and some other progress. The next step is to find something like $100k for the restoration.

There were only about 4 or 5 of these gandy dancer bunkhouses built in the 60's. Even Airstream needed a bit of 'reminding' before they'd own up to them ;-)

How recent are those photos? It will be neat to see it when it is complete.
