Semper Fi, American Embassies in Africa
Yesterday was a monumental day for the posting for the United States Marines, and Veterans Day.
When I was in Africa one of the first things a 20 year old does is check the lay of the land.
I found that the action in Capital cities for a young traveler began at the American Embassy. Most of the Marines guarding the Embassies were my age.
The most notable encounter was in Ethiopia. I met Robert "Beatle" Bailey and Richard Clore. I believe they were both from Alabama.
The Marine contingent in Addis Ababa rented, or leased an Old Italian villa. The Italians constructed the Villa during the occupation of Ethiopia.
I visited them several time for parties.
The party mixes were other Marines, Embassy diplomats from the U.S. Embassy, other foreign Embassies, and the Ethiopian Airline.
The parties were fun, entertaining, and educational.
The pilots for the Ethiopian Airlines were predominately former pilots from the German Lufwaffe.
The specter of travel.
