Odd year or what??!

We have a 1981 27 ft rb international with the twin beds I never see this model year in topics or forum or for sale. It's like that year never existed. Anyone out there with a similar oneClick image for larger version

1981 was a very bad year for Airstream, and most other RV companies. Many of them folded, and Airstream nearly did, as well. Not many trailers were built that year.

Interesting find. That thing looks an awful lot like our '73 Overlander. Here's a link to a thread on that model that I stumbled across: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f216...ths-47117.html

Here's a link from that thread to the Airstream Document Archives for that year: http://www.airstream.com/wp-content/...a9aa13a74f.pdf

Thanks for the history lesson, Terry.

Jim

The RV industry was hit hard by the oil embargo and inflation of the mid 1970's. Airstream was losing money as a division of Beatrice Foods Corporation by the end of the 1970's. Beatrice closed the California Factory in about 1979 (don't know the exact date), then looked for a buyer for the remainder of Airstream including the surviving Ohio plant. Wade Thompson and Peter Orthwein formed Thor and bought Airstream on August 29, 1980, likely after the 1981 models were already launched. They tightened the belts at Airstream and returned it to profitability within 12 months. I do not know the production numbers for 1981 models, but they were probably some of the lowest totals since Airstream started back into production after WW2. Thor, as you may know, prospered as they added several more brands and today is the largest RV company in the world. Airstream is their flagship brand.

I have a 1981 Exella 28 ft. motorhome. It shows it was number 9618. It is on a 1979 Chevy chassis.
