Monogram plaque on 1958 flying cloud

Hello! I recently bought a 1958 flying cloud with an old/original plaque on the front, below window, which contains this: "wmb mnb." the trailer's serial number is 22-8515 and was built in norwalk, ca. Does anyone know any history on this plaque or trailer? Thank you!!

Without photos, hard to tell, but could it be the previous owner/wife's initials?

I'm assuming the WMB would stand for Wally Merle Byam...his wifes name was Stella so im not sure what MNB would be....

Sounds like they are owners initials. I took a quick peek in my 1960 WBCCI Membership Directory and found a #3375 William and Marjery Baker of Port Orchard, WA. Since the directory does not usually provide middle initials, that could be a match. There may be more possible matches, but I didn't have the time to check the several pages of "B's".

It would help if you could provide any evidence of old big red WBCCI numbers that may be found above the front and rear windows. I can do more faster from that WBCCI number than the other information you have provided.

Hi John,
Well, your Airstream is a 1958. #3375 that I previously mentioned was first assigned in 1960. #8515 was first assigned in 1963. You might look to see if there are signs of an earlier number under the 8515 because many Airstreams joined the club when new. The highest number assigned in 1958 was #2290.

But regarding #8515, this first directory I have that shows it is 1966, which reflects membership as of 12/31/1965, when #8515 was assigned to Tye & Charlene Stermer of Riveira Beach, FL. They are listed as having participated on caravan #33 - Eastern Canada Summer 1963. The Stermers are last isted in the 1971 Directory with no additional caravans. I have no proof that the Stermer's owned your you Airstream, but it certainly is possible. Given that they were on a 1963 caravan, I assume they were the first members assigned #8515 in 1963.

#8515 is then unassigned in 1972 and 1973. I have no 1974 Directory, but it is then reassigned to E Jack and Roberta Williams of Santa Ana, CA in 1975. Roberta is last listed in the 2001 Directory and is listed for several WBCCI caravans along with Airstream company caravan 111 - Western Mexico-Guatemala Winter 1977. It is possible that the Williams owned your '58 Flying Cloud, but I'd consider it doubtful that it went on all their caravans due to the lack of amenities compared to newer Airstreams. But that is just a guess.

#8515 has been unassigned since 2001, so either the Stermers or the Williams (or possibly both) owned your Flying Cloud for at least part of the time they were club members.

Given the initials "WMB MNB" on your trailer, I can only guess that either that owner was never a WBCCI member, or else they were a member (under a different number) before 1963. (I wouldn't rule out the Bakers, as noted in my earlier post, since they were from the same state as you, although that is not proof.) That's all I can tell you.

In any case, enjoy your vintage Airstream!

EDIT: I see you posted photos while I was typing my response. Since your Flying Cloud is a California made Airstream. I'd tend to discount the Stermers from Florida, who likely would have bought a Ohio made Airstream. Thus the Williams seem more likely to me. I can't even hazard a guess as to when the initials were added other than to note that I would think later owners would have removed that plaque, maybe lending credence to the idea that that owner never was in WBCCI. But in the end, it's all a guess.

Rusty steel screws like those holding both the placard and the level are bad news for your AS (corrosion issues when wet). Try to replace them ASAP with aluminium screws or stainless steel screws and reseal them with Parbond sealant - try not to use silicone when in contact with aluminum. Now, those look like they have been there a while so it takes time to do damage - check for water leaks inside on the floor area.

Nice setup - a great camper.

I would also like to know how many years did they build the lever actuated master cylinder on the trailer? Also, what were Wally Bynum's childrens' names, or ex-wives names?

I don't have any specific information on production years for hydraulic trailer brakes, but I know they at least optionally offered them at least until 1962, maybe longer. Not sure what the first year was.

Wally Byam never had any children with either his first (forget her name) or second wife (Stella, whom he married long before your 1958 Flying Cloud was built). Wally switched Airstreams frequently between 1947 and 1957, but his last personal trailer was the unique gold annodized 22' tandem axle 1957 World Traveller that he took on the 1959-60 CapeTown to Cairo Caravan. He used this trailer from 1957 thru early 1959 to promote the African caravan. I think the chance that your 1958 Flying Cloud was owned by Wally Byam about zero regardless of the initials on the plaque. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Wally actually had his and Stellas full name painted on each trailer in big red letters, along with the locations to which they traveled. Such a simple plaque would not have been enough for Wally.

names..etc....

I guess my other post did not go through...does anyone know the names of Wally Bynum's wives and children? There are no numbers on the trailer, front or back, but are those numbers the same as the ones on the title? On the title it says 22-8515....Also, does anyone know which years Airstream put on the trailer the lever-actuated master cylinder.

Besides the roof and the area below the side window, are there any other places to find the serial number? Is it the same number as on the title? Thanks!!!
