Hi, I am one of several AirForums members with old WBCCI Membership Directories. I don't have the time to do a thorough search, but I will note that #23972 wasn't first assigned until 1970. That means that very likely there could be one of more older WBCCI numbers (likely 4 digit) on your 57 Overlander under 23972. There might only be some faint ghost outlines to be seen.

But regarding #23972, that number first appears in the 1971 directory, at which time it was assigned Harold and Frances Miles of Bergen, NJ in the 1971 directory (membership as of 12/15/1970). Being on of the highest numbers in that directory, I'd say the Miles' joined the club in very late 1970.

I don't have the time to do more research at this time, but maybe I can research later years when I get more time to see how long the Mile's were in the club, if they went on any caravans, and who else, if any, may have been assigned that number in years since. At this time, we cannot be sure the Miles owned your Airstream, but it is possible.

23972 is not listed in the current Blue Beret book. Apparently it is no longer an active member.

I am back home and had time to complete the research. #23972 was last assigned to Harold and Frances Miles in the 1979 directory at which time they lived in Weehawken, NJ.

Interestingly, at that time, they were listed as members of the New Mexico Unit of WBCCI (unit 068), as they had been since 1975, the first year that the directory indicated Unit affiliation. I guess one might speculate that they traveled to New Mexico frequently.

The Miles' are not listed as having participated on any numbered Airstream caravans. I spot checked a lot of directories from 1980 to 2012 and it does not appear that #23972 was ever reassigned.

So . . . that would suggest that your 1957 Overlander was almost assuredly owned by Harold and Frances Miles during the 1970's.

That's all I got. Enjoy your Overlander!

thank you so very much. very interesting. i guess they were snowbirds! i'll take this info to ancestry.com and see if i can find a descendant. so funny; i purchased this trailer in VA, (while i was living in NC) and the story i got was the buyer purchased it from a man who lived out his days in it. I wonder if that was Mr. Miles.

I used to live in hoboken, very close to weehawken. it's funny to think a trailer would be kept there. I wonder if it was kept in NM.

Thanks again for this. It's so nice to have somewhere to start research from (with the WBCCI #'s, and someone to explain them).

Has anyone considered putting this info into some sort of registry or database? If anyone ever reads this and wants to help, i can do the website development. Just would need old directories owner's to scan or led to someone who can scan the directories, and software that would convert it to text.

Lauren

Sanning directories

The old directories up to 1966 were scanned. The later date directories are bound and very time consuming to scan. There is a separate thread down in the club area below that is reserved for this type of research. Joe is a big contributor, but several others also have collections of old directories. Since the club does not keep track of the numbers and reissues them frequently, it is difficult to say which person owned a particular trailer. We get about 50 requests per year to try to track.

23972 or 29372?

Arrgghh. I just noticed that the title of your first post and of this thread says 29372, but in your first post you said 23972? Which is it? I researched 23972. I won't do 29372 unless you confirm that is the correct number.

Hi Lauren,
Sorry I didn't notice the typo before I researched the first number.

#29372 was first assigned in 1974. The 1975 Directory (membership as of 12/15/1974) lists the original assignees as C Norris and Othelle Stulting of Charlottesville, VA. The Stultings are last listed in the 1986 Directory, still in Charlottesville, VA, with no caravans listed. They were members of the Virginia Unit (Unit 109), their entire time in the club. It appears that Mr. Stulting went by his middle name "Norris". I have no way to tell what the "C" stands for.

Based upon a spot check of later directories, it does not appear that #29372 was ever reassigned, so we can be pretty sure the Stultings owned your '57 Overlander during at least part of their time in the club (maybe during all of it).

Sorry, not quite as exotic as New Jersey and New Mexico, but at least you've got a cool vintage Airstream and some prior owner names to research. Enjoy!
