I haven’t updated in awhile. Still no news to report on the Jackson Center front although folks are working on a presentation for them.

The record player arrived from Germany after a little over a month in transit.

Today I finished reassembling the chairs. They are the same style, a different base but as close as we’ve found.

One upcoming modification is I recently picked up on eBay one of the correct Hehr roof vents with the porthole window so my roof vent lids are coming off and headed to be copied like the originals now that we have real measurements to compare to.

This spring We plan to break ground on a modest 2 rv bay shop at the house. Regardless if we keep this piece of history to ourselves or it finds itself on permanent indoor display somewhere (that’s our goal) it will be nice to have our trailers indoors at home to keep watch over.

I should mention Joe found the chairs for me in Michigan. Thanks Joe!

Scott.,
If Airstream does not give you a new Globetrotter for this unit I would be very surprised.

The little things seem to endlessly take up time (and money). After some work from a sheet metal shop with their laser and a talented glass guy we have reproduction port hole Hehr roof vents like we could see in one of the overhead shots.

I took apart 3 original Hehr roof vents, had them laser cut the outer and then the inner (2 different diameters) then had an old time glass shop cut some vintage glass with the same texture as the original and install.

You are truly a restoration artist. I am so glad that trailer found you and your uncompromising efforts.
You Sir, have done a good thing.

Scott, were the glass portholes in the Hehr roof vents standard for the 55s or an option? Friends of ours had an Ohio built 55 FC that had the same. Just wondering. Thanks

This an excellent question that I, for one, do not know the answer to. Wally Byam had these covers on at least some of the Airstreams he used. I have heard of them on a couple of other Airstreams, but most seem to not have had them. Were they a rare option or an aftermarket customization? Don't know. Maybe someday an early price list will turn up that shows them listed.

I think they were a high end option. It's hard to say since everything on this trailer is unique pretty much, windows, end caps, tub, flooring, kitchen, and the list goes on. Here's a picture from either Joe or Dale (I forget who passed this one along) which shows the vents from above.

I do know that at least one of the Vanderbilt Airstreams had these vents as well, because I bought one from one of those trailers to copy the dimensions and the setup as close as possible.

I'd love to see a build sheet on these or option list as Joe mentioned. Ours was a California build by the way if that helps in the pondering!

The Commodore Vanderbilt that you got the lid from and Wally's gold trailer that also had these lids were Ohio built, so they seem to have occurred in trailers from both plants.

Thank you! My wife and kids and others have helped too, it's taken a small army. Hopefully next week we get some news from Jackson Center, at least an update. We've decided it shouldn't be on the road from rally to rally, but needs to displayed for its history. If they decide to pass we will have to figure out what the next chapter is. We're really attached to it, but it's an awfully important and expensive garage ornament.

On the garage side of things, we are excited to be breaking ground this spring/summer on a 2 bay 32x32 shop with 12 foot doors so we can have our trailers indoors at home safe and secure out of the elements. We've finished with the architectural drawings, just finalizing engineering requirements then permits.

I'm currently helping a friend on their trailer restoration but look forward to not having an Airstream project for a long while. I understand how those that have transitioned from restoring for fun to restoring for a living burn out on the hobby. I'm ready to just camp!

I'll update any Jackson Center news when if we get any (good or bad).
