I just watched the full length 16mm Cape town to Ciaro, and Pee Wee, you have my total respect. Seeing you build roads and cross those river... (insert big bow here). To meet Halle Salasi, what an honor that must have been. People worship him as a god. I had thought he requested one, must have been wrong.

Apparently this probably came from a discussion between Wally and Haile Selassie. That a second gold trailer was to be produced. For whatever reason it never happened. My best guess is when Wally got back to the United States, his illness kicked in.

What a wonderful op for advertising. Handing the keys to the Lion of Judah in front of his spanking brand new Gold Airstream. It would have been nice, but it never came to fruition.

Dale,
It was terrific meeting you, and hearing your extraordinary tales of adventure at the International.

I am so flattered knowing that you own one of my Tee shirt.

I have that shirt too... it was given to me by Mistral Blue and is my very favorite. I only wear it on special occasions.

Vincent Price owned a trailer similar to an Airstream; it was an SOB though. He bought it because he loved to cook and it had a kitchen in it and he would tow it up in the mountains or out to the beach and invite all of his Hollywood friends out to have gourmet picnics he would prepare on the stove and in the oven for them. I don't think he ever actually spent the night in it though.

I've got a picture of what is supposed to be Howard Hughes' Trailer. I looks like it could be a custom airstream, but he could well have had his own airplane company build it.

Airstream Astronauts

I read on the NASA site that at one time they were thinking of retiring the Astro Van Airstream. They were to replace it with an S.O.B.
It seems though that the Fliers themselves really liked the old Airstream. So it was saved from retirement, and it is still in service shuttling the flight crews to and from the launch pad, when they are suited up.
This brings up the question, I wonder if any of our astronauts, famous or not own Airstreams.

I just took about 30 photos yesterday of what the owner claims is an Airstream customized for Howard Hughes. It appears to be an International 31 converted into a fifth-wheel and painted with Argosy colors. There is no builder's plate that I could find. Judging from the fancy control panel inside, I could believe the Hughes connection.

It is in pretty bad shape now and has been "re-customized" by one or more shade-tree mechanics, but the original modifications were very professional and obviously very, very costly. For instance, there appears to be two Onan generators and there is a complex hydraulic system driving big leveling jacks.

I'm guessing it may have been used as a deer camp most recently.

Look for a possible future article in Airstream Life, that's why. If that doesn't pan out, then photos will be posted here.

I read somewhere that Brad Pitt had a classic Airstream moho nicknamed "The Love Sub." Also, Lance Armstrong has one...
