Am I correct in that airstream fixed this design flaw with the bumper, frame, and she

Hey guys and gals. So many different forums I could put this under, figured I'd start here!

Is it reasonable for someone looking to buy used to rule out the 2011 and older models due to the dreaded bumper/frame water intrusion in the rear?

Do we have any information from airstream stating that they specifically fixed the terrible bumper/ frame/ shell design flaw that plagued many of their older model trailers?

Thanks![emoji33]

The Aluminum floor channel has wrapped around the floor since the early 1980's. for water to soak into the floor from the bumper lid it would have to run uphill. Most rear floor damage is due to a leak further up on the shell collecting in the top portion of the floor channel and seeping onto the floor.

I've read others state 2012 and above have the fix. Most of the my readings of this problem have been from pre-2012 owners of Safaris. I have a 2008 Classic 25fb and have no bumper water infiltration. I have yet to read of a report from a Classic user to have that issue not that there couldn't be owners that have had a subfloor issue. The bumper design is different on the Classic and that helps keep water out.

When I had my interior remodel performed last fall I had the vinyl floor replaced with Marmoleum. The company that did the work (A&P Vintage Trailer Works) reported my floor was sound and no prior leaking evidence. Now you can get water leaks from above via windows that can run down to the floor and get under the vinyl where the edges separate from the floor/shell floor area and if unchecked can simulate a leaking bumper scenario.

From my reading on this forum about leaks, I became paranoid about my AS. So much that I tore into the rear bumper area, ran probe tests and then sliced open the vinyl floor to inspect the floor. I found a good seal in the back and no signs of leakage. There was a minor stain in the bath area near the wall where most likely it was from the time I accidentally left the shower on lock versus shutting it off and it leaked onto the floor while I was there. No rot.

Most every post I read about floor rot was most often related to panoramic windows. I was told the bumper area too and several posts mention it. I do not think that leaking is necessarily related to a specific year or a cutoff. It is true that in 2012-2013, according to the Airstream rep who spoke at a rally in Sarasota, that they started adding washer seals to rivets. Since then; however, there have been posters with newer trailers that leaked too. I believe that owners have to be observant as much as possible.

Just remember, you can have the worst rated used car in the world to own; maintain it well, and it can be the best car you've owned, (mine is a 95 Jaguar XJS convertible). Conversly you can buy the best recommended used car, but poorly maintained and it will be a dog.

The newest trailers also come with their fair share of horror stories.

So don't discount older trailers, as a well maintained, sheltered trailer that has possibly been re-seamed and inspected regularly will be a very good buy.

Cheers
Tony

Unfortunately the classic is too big for me.

I'm looking at the 23 or 25 foot flying clouds and I'm just kinda wondering if I should expand my search to include older models from maybe 2008-2011. so far I've only been looking at 2012+ because I thought that's when the design issue was fixed/addressed but looks like there are no clear answers on the topic.

I had a 2001 Safari 25 for two years. The only time the floor got wet was when I left the rear storage door open during a downpour. I read about the problem but a moisture meter probe of my unit showed no indication of moisture intrusion until I had my senior moment.

Following. I just finished driving my 2014 27FB Classic from Mississippi to New York and noticed that stains have appeared under the linoleum on both sides of the dinette cabinets along the back bulkhead. Obviously there is water leaking into the subflooring, but I cannot tell where it is coming from...
