#7702 - Around the World Caravan?

There is a new classified for a 62 the owner describes as "might" have been on the Around the World Caravan. The WBCCI # is 7702. Anyone have a list of participants, or able to verify?

The trailer looks like it is in decent shape and a TV is also available.

I can confirm that trailer #7702 WAS NOT on the Around the World Caravan.

Here is the link to the ad from a frequent vintage Airstream reseller:

I suspect he is just trying to up the interest level.

7702

In the ATW directory there are these 7000 numbers, 7170, 7305, 7667. One of the key ckecks is the serial number. That will identify if the trailer was built in time to go on the ATW.

If the Goransons is a '63 then I would say this '62 would have been early enough. The lack of any info in the ad other than a "tantalizing" maybe it went on the caravan tells me it most likely did not. It would have been worth a different price if it had, and worth researching to determine the value, which would indeed be higher. I wish they had better pics of it.

There was one more "7000" number on the ATW caravan: 7505.

There are confirmed 1963 trailers on the ATW caravan, as well as confirmed 1962 Airstreams. Photo evidence suggests there were a few Airstreams on the ATW caravan that many have been 1961 or earlier. Torsion axles were required, a feature that was first used on production Airstreams in 1961. Any earlier Airstreams that may have been on the ATW caravan would have had to be converted to Torsion axles before they could participate.

Directory References

7505 1963, Numeric Hinegardner, no alpha listing.

7505 1964, Numeric Hingegardner, alpa listing shows Caravans 32 and 35.

32 = Eastern Mexico Winter 1963
35 = Round the World

They also appear in the ATW directory. I skipped their number on my earlier posting.

I saw that eBay auction: 1962 Airstream International Land Yacht Ambassador 27': eBay Motors (item 140452393773 end time Sep-12-10 11:50:03 PDT)

While a 1962 Overlander is of the approriate age to have been on the 1963-64 Around the World Caravn, there was no such trailer bearing the numbers 7776. Unless this trailer has other old numbers under 7776, there is no chance it was on the ATW caravan. I have not had a chance to compare the auction photos of the trailer to photos from the caravan, but in my opinion it is unlikely that it participated. Just a hopeful seller, I think.

Joe did I send you a set of the Tolles paperwork? I have copies, I promised you and Bob each one but not sure I sent them out. Included is a full roster of every trailer on the caravan, city, state, WBCCI number etc.

Nope, you did not send me a copy. I would appreciate one when you get a chance and am willing to compensate you for copying and mailing costs.

This trailer is again offered on eBay, again falsely stating that it was on the Around the World Caravan. I guess the prior sale to a buyer from England eventually fell through after the truth came out. Do not be fooled. It was NOT on the ATW caravan. Do not be fooled into paying a premium for it:

I messaged the seller this morning when I came across it (before catching the thread) here is what he sent me:

I was told that it had been to Iraq, but I have no
proof of this, thanks.

I did reply the same information and have reported the listing to ebay. Not sure if it does any good.

There is currently no mention of the ATW caravan, and only your question is shown, as he answered it.

EVERYTHING needs done on this trailer. Even the belly looks like it's been "drove hard and put away wet".

It's not so much that it isn't from a caravan, rather that he keeps marketing as such that bothers me. He's been given that info a few times over the different sales attempts. I do appreciate he at least posted he has no proof, that is something!

The guy....... I bought the Airstream emailed the below to me
.................................................. .................................

Beginning quote from letter from Airstream historian:
"That is correct. If it has the number 7776 on it, it was in the club and may have participated on other caravans. I have the participant list for the Around the World (ATW) Caravan, so it is easy to confirm that #7776 did not participate on that one. We don't have participant lists for most other caravans, but sometime old membership directories can help.

#7776 was first assigned in 1962, so that is appropriate for the trailer, but unfortunately I have few directories from the 1960's. I can tell that someone with the last name Waterman had that number in 1965-66 (but have no other information like first names, location, or caravans participated on). The Watermans may or may not have had the trailer in 1962-63. By 1967-68 #7776 was assigned to someone else who may have had the same or different Airstream - I have no way of knowing. Bottom line, I cannot really tell you anything about this trailer other than that is was in the club, but was not on the ATW caravan.
