Great pictures Dale. Thanks for sharing these with all of us.
Who is that young couple in the last picture, they look familiar?
Can you tell us more about the trailer that Wally towed with the VW micro bus?

The couple? Dale and Susan, the gentleman is Susan's father. My Mother's car, and "Stella's Gold Trailer."
I know little about Wally's trailer that he used behind the VW Van. That was another summer in Europe and another International Rally.

Do you know how many trailers had the #1 caravan club designation on them? I know of the gold one, the Bubble and the white one. In one of these pictures, the Vanderbuilt trailer shows "office 1." Were there others you know of?
Keep 'em coming. We'll get the whole collection on here one day.

The trailer with the VW looks like it could be a 52/53 Clipper. I like the look of the front window on these trailers.

I have no idea how many trailers actually had the number 1 one them. Going backwards there was the gold trailer. I am quite sure Wally's 1958 Western Canadian Caravan trailer had the "1". His 1956 trailer in Europe, his 1955 trailer in Europe. I guess there might have been 5 or 6 more.
The trailer that he and Neil used in 1948 was used on the first Caravan to Mexico and Central America in 1951. You see the #1. At that time I have to believe that in was only and ID and didn't necessarly represent Wally's number 1. Could be. You notice it says office, no Byam.
Wally was on 19 Caravans. Does this mean he had 19 different trailers? I don't know. Probably not. He probably used some Airstreams for several Caravans during the year. Special Caravans like Europe, and Africa he used high profile trailers with all the bells and whistles. Because he was traveling light in 1955, he had a stripped down trailer to use as a scout trailer behind a VW.
The actual "Vanderbilt" trailer that was used in 1952 at the Conventions and the Coronation never had a number one on it.
The mysteries of Airstreams.

Whatever happened to the "Vanderbilt-Commodore" trailer?
Does it still exist?
Thank you Pee Wee!

I have no idea. Somewhere, someone, commented that it might have burned to the ground in Europe. I just have no idea what happens to the trailers.
I know someone has my Mother's second Airstream.
We know that the gold trailer is in Jackson Center.
We know that the 1955 European Wally trailers has been purchased in Phoenix.
The prototype Wally B is in Colorado.
Otto and Oscar Payne's multi-Caravan trailer is in storage in Wyoming.
And that's about all I know about the high profile trailers.

Small Correction: Etta and Oscar Payne's . . .
This is the second surviving trailer (besides Wally's Gold Trailer in Jackson Center) that I am aware of from the 1959-60 Cape Town to Cairo Caravan. That makes 4 known survivors from the Around the World Caravan, but only 2 known survivors from the Cape Town to Cairo Caravan. There have to be more waiting to be found.
And as PeeWee notes, the Payne's trailer was on other Caravan's to Central America and Europe, I believe.
