Early Thanksgiving
Early Thanksgiving?
Well last year I wanted to "Brine" the bird, but Natalie wouldn't let me......, she was to afraid it might be to salty! Well, what-ta ya know, a week after.... I did....., and it was great! (Not to mention two thanksgivings back to back) I combined several "recipes" and adjusted to what I thought sounded good and roasted it. This year...., Yup! we're having two birds I'm envious, would love to have an iPad, but already have too much stuff on my "I think I need" list. As far as cell phones go, Gemma wouldn't make too much off us, we still have Krazors from......, Hum....., can't remember how long ago it's been.

Dinner With The Girls
Last night we had dinner with lots of ladies. Murray did most of the cooking - what a guy!
First on the menu: beef tenderloin tartare, with fleur de sel, fresh cracked black pepper, ground espelette chile peppers, shallots, scallions and capers.
Later we had Murray's fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, coleslaw with a creamy vanilla pineapple dressing, and Murray's caesar salad with homemade garlic parmesan croutons. Gemma boiled the potates, grated the carrots for the slaw and dressed it, and made the gravy. See, she can cook!
We had an apple pie for dessert but we never got to it.

Pacquiao vs. Margarito
Last night we watched Manny Pacquiao rearrange Antonio Margarito's face at our friends', Debbie and AJ's, home.
We had nachos, rice, refried beans, chicken stew, pork carnitas, guacamole, pico de gallo, Mexican crema and tortillas from La Tapatia Mexicatessen - South San Francisco, CA. All washed down with Patron Silver margaritas and/or "easy margaritas/palomas" - Squirt and Patron. There was pan dulce for dessert, but we never got to that.
Sorry, no actually images of our plates. (We forgot.) But we attached an image of what looks to us like a very delicous chicarrones and al pastor burrito from La Tapatia.

Beef Tenderloin
Last night we had beef tenderloin, grape tomatoes from our garden, grilled sliced onions tossed with a balsamic vinaigrette and, or course, steamed rice.

Early Dinner Tonight
Wow! Dinner early - super early. Grilled chicken with canned green beans with BACON! Oh, and it needs to be canned green beans. Want to ensure we get our daily sodium intake taken care of all in one fell swoop.

Gemma Made Dinner!
We had a fairly early dinner tonight - Murray and Gemma's brother went to the Warriors vs. Nuggets game this evening.
Yakisoba noodles with roasted, shredded chicken, Chinese sausage, carrots, celery and shredded cabbage. Gemma cooked! Hooray!

LOL about the sodium intake, however dinner looks great, but I'm curious........, uh.........., would that be steamed rice with dinner?

Of Course!
Rice - check!
But not tomorrow night! We're going to Modesto to spend Thanksgiving with Murray's extended family. No rice there. Gemma's just hoping there won't be any competition for turkey wings. Wish her luck!

I commandeered a corner of the kitchen.
Last night it was homemade cream of chicken noodle soup, but too hungry to take pictures. Tonight while Natalie was busy preparing for tomorrow, I fixed grilled steaks with onions/mushrooms, baked acorn squash with apple and cranberry compote, herb roasted potatoes and crescent rolls. Mixed sherbet for desert if we can waddle to the fridge.........., later. Happy Thanksgiving Ya'll!

Abalone
Last night we had abalone. Murray harvested it! Abalone season ends at the end of the month.
So, sauteed abalone with a squeeze of Meyer lemon juice (lemon courtesy of our neighbor) and uh, um, rice. We also had some peas but we shot the image before the peas made it on the plate.

Cornish Pastie
It's a traditional hand held dinner of steak, potatos, onion and turnip wrapped in a pastry. Cornwall, England is/was known for it's mining industry for centuries. The men take these pasties in warming lunch pails with them into the mines for their dinners. Many of my ancesters, including my dad, granddads, great granddads, uncles, cousins and so on worked these tin and copper mines for centuries. Late 19th and early 20th centuries many miners imigrated to many countries throughout the world mostly at the beconing of mining companies as these Cornish miners were considered the best hard rock mimers in the world. Locally in Norhern Ca. Grass Valley was well known for it's Cornish immigrants. My mother taught my wife, Lynn, how to make them. We have enjoyed the pastie in Cornwall also. They are as plentiful there as hamburgers are here.

What's for Dinner??? Uh...., Um.........
Our daughter is becoming a great cook........., however........, after volunteering to help cook, and being introduced to our primary dinner guest..........., she is becoming very fond of the main course. I think she is having second thoughts about the main course.........., so "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"?, or should I say "What's for Dinner"?

Turkey Wing Update
Gemma scored three out of four turkey wings. Some little seven year old twerp got the other one.
No worries, we'll soon be on our way to Gemma's brother's home for more turkey and the possibility of two more turkey wings. This is turning out to be one of the BEST . . . DAYS . . . EVER!!!

Today, not what's for dinner, it's "What's for Dessert"!
OK....., dinner was as most everyone expects......., Leftovers. However, I DO enjoy them the day after, but since our girls won't be back till days before X-Mas (both in college ), we decided to put up the tree today (first time it's ever been up this early, usually 1 & 1/2 weeks before), and to help get everyone in the Holiday spirit, we had "Reindeer" cupcakes for desert! Yum!

Dessert!
So adorable! (Obviously Gemma is writing this, Murray would never use the word, "adorable".)
You two seem to have an awful lot of time on your hands.
Yesterday it was dessert-a-palooza.
At Modesto, there was apple crumb pie, pumpkin pies (plural), berry pie, Oreo Pie, pecan pie, banana cream pie, pecan bars, maple cookies, chocolate-chocolate chip cupcakes and Murray's devil's food cake. Everything was home made and we tried our best to sample everything. There were so many desserts that there had to be a table in the garage to hold all of them.
At Alamo there was cranberry tart, a "chocolate symphony" cake, more pumpkin pie, coffee cake and pumpkin bread. All purchased at Whole Foods and Katrina Rozelle. Katrina Rozelle Pastries & Desserts Home Page
The images below are of our niece, Bailey, with the Oreo pie she made, the dessert table, and Murray and his cousin, Jeff, as they hung out with the rest of the boys in the garage/man cave/dessert room. It was perfect - they could eat dessert to their hearts' content and it didn't matter if they spilled or used their sleeves as napkins.

Devil's Food Cake - Before, During and After.
We couldn't resist posting images of Murray's devil's food cake and our two year old nephew, Fish - short for Fisher. (He say's he's almost three!)
1. Before
2. During (The first thing he did was scrape off all of the chocolate ganache frosting with a spoon and shove it in his mouth. Priorities.)
3. During
4. After (Well not really after, after, because he had another huge slice two hours later.) Can you see the chocolate ganache frosting on his forearm?
P.s. Tracie, a five year old, pronounced Murray's cake, "Delish!".
