What do you put in here?
We just picked up our new FC 28 and have a question. What do you put in this little storage area? It is on the wall next to the stove. Our salesman said it is supposed to hold spices but it appears too shallow to hold them. My friend, Arcticfox, has the same little spot on their trailer and she is at a loss for a good solution as well. So, Airstreamers, please share your ideas. Thank you!

Pic?
I have a spice rack at the rear of the stove on the wall. Look for bottles that fit and transfer spices to them.

According to Good Eats - putting spices above the stovetop is a good way to have the heat ruin them. And as for putting measuring spoons, etc. there, they'd get greasy.
I say keep a hip flask there and sip while cooking - might not make for tasty food but you won't give a darn anyway.
Seriously? Trivets, pot holders, or my personal favorite - and much needed friend - ta-da! A fire extinguisher.

Different rack than mine, but most off the shelf bottles don't fit mine either! I haven't spent the time looking for spice bottles, so mine just go on their side, angled, etc....whatever fits. The rack also holds a hot pad or two and toothpicks.

Back in the day McCormick Spices all came in rectangular tins about 1.5 inches by 3 inches by 2 to 4 inches high. Most went to bottles probably in the 70's - Airstream is obviously still caught in a time warp with their spice racks.

Really?? Because of the curved wall and corresponding curve of the rack, bottles don't' sit flat. Many are too big in circumference to fit the rack. Lower shelf is too short for many of the bottles.
What Paula said.....

Yep. It holds little bottles on the top shelf and larger bottles on the bottom shelf. It is always pretty well stocked. Even the small Tupperware salt and pepper shakers fit. We really use it. Does the Classic spice rack have different dimensions than the spice racks in other trailers? The Classic cabinets are subcontracted to an off-site cabinet shop. The cabinets in the other trailers are made in-house. I wonder if that matters. Some bottles are actually a little small. Some to tall- I just lay them on their sides. Some Season-All cans are too big. I put them in the cabinet above the stove. Tony Chacore's cans are too big, too. The rectangular black pepper cans/boxes fit sideways.

Congratulations!
We have a rack in the same place on our 2009 International 28. We definitely keep our spices here. Some of the smaller bottles from grocery stores fit just fine. If you want to keep it pretty, you can either buy all the same brand once you fund the right size, or shop for empty containers that fit perfectly and then fill them from larger or bulk containers before you leave home. Our peppermill and lower sodium salt container do not fit, so we lay them on their side in the upper shelf.
The heat of the stove is not an issue because we use a fair quantity of spices, and go thru them fast enough that it's not an issue. At the end of the season, we take them home and start out fresh in the spring. For those of which we use a lot, me might buy a bulk container and refill as necessary. But we focus a lot on keeping weight down, so the smaller containers are well suited for this philosophy.
Have fun!

I suppose you could ... find some small containers which would fit in a small tray to put in there. Transfer your 'spices' from the big to small, then you can take the 'container tray' out of the storage area when you are cooking...so the heat doesn't bother the spice..

Here's the spice rack in our 2015 FC28. Not pretty, but functional. Combination of bottles from an old spice storage set, bottles that fit, and bottles relabeled. We do a lot of cooking, so go through a variety of spices fairly quickly. We actually installed spice racks near the cooktop on our previous rv's. Really appreciate the FC built ins!

If the space doesn't seem well suited to spices, might look for some small items that can rest in there that will personalize your interior space and make you smile when you look at them.
My spice rack areas are in two sections and span the length of the galley. I found some pretty, brushed stainless and glass spice jars that are oval in shape, that I have filled with bulk spices and fit nicely in one section.
The other holds a small, pretty mug, a salt/pepper mill, a stainless shaker with cinnamon sugar, etc.
Make it your own.....do with it what suits you.

Does anybody know of bottle sets from somewhere that one could transfer into and look more uniform? In both the FC recessed rack and the Classic wooden wall hanger.

I found my bottles at BB&B, I believe. They come with labels.
I have a strip of Velcro on the rear of my spice rack area, and small pieces of corresponding Velcro on the back of each lid. It helps.
If you don't put anything too tall or too heavy in those spaces, things should stay put, and the velcro will assist. Could probably also use magnetic peel and stick tape.

Congrats on your new purchase! We came very close to getting the International 28, but decided on the International 25FB instead. I hope you have many great times in your 28.

Oh, sorry I don't have any suggestions on using that area above your stove. Be sure to update when you put it to good use.
