Hi
This is "the carnivore" Bruce saying that I got Dorsey's pan fried, mung bean dish (see previous post) for lunch today and it was delicious!

That makes you an "omnivore" Bruce. There's hope for you yet.

Dorsal, thanks for posting that. I have both of Heidi Swanson's Super Natural books. The "Everyday" book has been more reliable for me than her earlier book.

Gene,
It is kind of funny, I love some vegetarian dishes, the one above for example, but some???? Blechhhhh! Dorsey tries to save me from myself and I'll try anything so we are figuring out my likes and dislikes slowly. I think there is actually some hope.

Don't worry Bruce. There are veggie dishes I don't like either. When an omnivore doesn't understand why I don't like beets and squash, I ask him if he eats rats. Years ago there were some really tasteless and boring veggie dishes, but things have improved.

And, beer is made of veggies.

Hi Tom, I don't have her earlier book but I've heard that about it. I cook regularly from her blog, 101 Cookbooks. I'll post more from that, as well as my favorite blog, My New Roots, by Sarah B.

path of least resistance cooking: when those words "what's for dinner tonight, honey" make you shudder. We usually have corn tortillas (good ones, no flour and GF) in the fridge, melt pepper jack or whatever cheese on it in the broiler, left over rice, open a can of good beans, slices of avocado all on the side, and a heap of coarse tomato salsa and some hot sauce. Roll em up and ya gots some awesome tacos. When I can barely muster the energy to dust the cobwebs off the can opener, this one gets a very positive response at the dinner table.

Beer is vegetarian, but has gluten. Gin and Vodka however are gluten free.

Glad to her that our Martini's tonight (vodka) and tomorrow (gin) are gluten free. Now if we could get the calories down to 0 also.

Gin, like chocolate, has other benefits that outweigh (pun not intended) being low cal. Salad of young greens with a really good vinegarette and a martini or two and you're set. The olives provide protein.

Heidi Swanson's recipe for Otsu salad with cukes is awesome. In fact, it's going to be at a pot luck next weekend! The tofu is something I make all the time and keep in the fridge ready to throw into any dish ... Or just nibble for a snack. btw, I add extra veggies, like red pepper and anything crunchy and leftover. Also, keep the dressing/ sauce on the side for individual tastes. It also makes a lot more than needed IMHO . Great to keep for another day.

Other fab cookbooks: earthbound farm's "food to live by" and rebar modern food cookbook from Victoria, BC

For you gfs: plant based tequila and bourbon are safe choices.

TinCrumpet, reminds me of a store-bought meat pie I was digging into years ago, plucked out an extra large piece of beef covered in delectable gravy, put it in my mouth, bit down, and almost lost a tooth filling. That large piece of beef was a chunk of wood.

Gin? Who mentioned gin? Going vegetarian doesn't mean one can't have any fun~!

I made this Gin Martini-Olive loaf the other night. Not gluten free, but a little slice now and then won't hurt! It also freezes well; always good to have something a little special put away for guests.
