Pots and Pans with Removable Handles

We found a set of stainless steel pots and pans for the Airstream with removable handles. The Brand is called Cristel, and the line of pots is Strate. The pans are high quality and quite heavy. They are made in France. We got them at Christmas time and have been cooking in the house with them, and today I took them to the Airstream galley. The pans have been great, and the handles are sturdy.

If there is a downside to these pans, it is the price. $$$. Pound for pound I think they cost more than the Airstream!

Whoa... I guess if your buying one of those fancy new trailers then these would be the pans for you, I think you forgot a couple $$ when you describe them. For those prices they better never burn my food (no matter how hard I seem to try too) I'll have to settle for my Magma set, I guess I'm just not quite chef enough to warrant such nice cookware.

Please don't take that wrong, it's just even with your warning, that was quite the sticker shock when I looked them up on Amazon thinking maybe a new set for the wife to enjoy (Maybe NOT)

Most backpacking pans are made with removable handles or fold away handles and all stack inside each other. Much much less expensive too and are very well made. Stainless and non stick.
REI.com is a good place to look at them .
Mine will go from pack to trailer when the time comes.

We have the stackable Magma 10 Piece Gourmet Nesting Stainless Steel Cookware Set It has been fantastic! Highly recommend it. We've used ours for over a year, day in and day out while full timing.

The whole set stacks together to take up very little space.

That's what we just got in the off season for this year, Bold. Mostly for use on the induction stove top outside. Someone reported the handles melt - DW contacted the company, they claim it's a product of flames beyond the bottom surface area of the pan. I doubt that - especially since they also said they're working on another version of the handles. But for our application, the flame piece wouldn't apply. Just hope they don't conduct heat and melt from the inside....

We also love the Magma set, and added the stainless steel colander and the saute/omelette pan. Both pieces get a lot of use, and take up no space as they fit right in the nest.

I saw these on a boating video the other day. Might be nice in smaller Airstreams or for folks who just warm up stuff and don't do a lot of cooking.

Yes, it's really only 3 saucepans, one pot and one skillet. We use 4 routinely.

We like the Magma on our boat and found we need to remove handle with high flame. Just ordered ten piece Ceramica version for AS. The larger set allows us to cook potatoes and veg same time. Good for covered roasting too

Any Aluminum + Ceramic suggestions?

While we're set for our 1960 Avion T20's cook gear, we are looking for a nice nesting set for our 1988 VW Westfalia in aluminum with a good quality ceramic coating - vs. the teflon which scratches & wears, sluffing teflon bits into your food as they get old.

We had the alum/teflon in the Westy already, but they're now almost 30 years old & the teflon is crappy.

From our trials with house pans, the Alum/Ceramic "Orgreenic" brand has lasted & is real non-scratchable ceramic - good stuff, but another white ceramic ?? brand my wife got at Ross, was a fake ceramic which scratches as easy as teflon & lost it's non-stick within a few uses with plastic utensils at home.

CW sells an SS + white ceramic Magma set - does anyone know if it's quality or crappy fake ceramic?

Also - anyone know of any other Aluminum/Ceramic stackable/nesting options with folding or removable handles??

I'll look at REI & the other links above, so no need to repeat those.

Also - I would've thought that all you lightweight AS & Kin folks would prefer the lighter weight aluminum cookware to keep your laden weights down!!??

When Backpacking the Bruce TRail in Ontario, I used mostly a large Sierra cup, until I spilled a meal on a rocky beach one time.
Shortly afterwards When on the Long Trail in Vermont, I found a "RockyCup" from Boy Scouts of America. It was perfect.
In a weak moment I gave it to a certain 'elfin' lady backpacker and have regretted it since.
Had to make my iown.
I still use it in the AS on occasion.

The handles on ours did not just melt, they caught on fire, and it had nothing to do with flames over the side if the pan. However - so what if it did?? There were flames in my Airstream, coming from the handle of the Magma pan. We no longer use the handles- until they are redesigned we consider them life-threatening.

What about teflon vs aluminum? Any thoughts from users?

I have had the Magma-style pans for 20 years of full-time use and they still look and work great. I bought mine for close to $400 in 1996 from Welcome Aboard, a marine supply company. I only had Teflon in the skillet and when it wore off they replaced it for free with a non-Teflon version. I purchased a compatible sauté pan and colander from Magma about two years ago and they have worked well. They are compatible with my 20 year old handles. I have never had any problems whatsoever with those handles but they do look slightly different from the Magma handles. Having removable handles is not just great for storage but it allows you to use all the pans in the oven to braise or bake with. I also use as the occasional mixing bowl. Great versatility.
