Huge demand for oak spice racks?

I was keeping an eye on an ebay sale of an oak spice rack (mine is the white plastic variety & I don't really like it). The sold price was over $220 and shipping was $40! Is there really such a shortage of these things? I do woodworking as another hobby (like I don't have enough already) & wonder if I should make a bunch of them to sell to Airstreamers. Think there's any demand? They shouldn't be too hard to copy from my white one. I was just being lazy & though I'd buy one already made! Whatcha think?eBay Motors: Unique Airstream travel trailer tambour spice rack (item 250218190046 end time Feb-27-08 16:57:38 PST)

Becky,
I had the same thought - maybe build some for money. It is unique with the tambour, can't imagine paying that much tho...

If it would fit above the stove in my Trade wind and was cheap enough, I would be tempted.

If someone were to make a pattern of the side with the wall curve, I could make some for folks - at much less than that ebay price

Wait - who said anything about profit??
If I got just the height X width and the curve of one side piece I could figure the rest out.
No, haven't priced tambour. Might eat up all of my "profit".
I'd love to do Casini, it looks like a good time and a great location. But it got scheduled on the dates of our annual camping trip that is set in stone.
Have a good one...

Dave:
Why not just "custom" build them?
20 1/2" wide and 25" tall is what I have, same width as the stove top so it looks nice mounted right tween the bulkhead and cooktop.
But a good fab man could offer dimensions to fit other applications, or just make them out of carbon!

I'll do wood and leave the carbon to you.
Thanks for the demensions, I can get the curve from my trailer.
You're right, they could be built to any spec.

I just finished a pewter shelf made out of reclaimed wormy red oak. I think I may have enough left and a spice rack will be next. I have never built a tambor door before so we'll se how it turns out. Thanks for the idea. Robert

Not to rain on your parade but...

If you're a real cook, the last place you want to store your spices is over the stove. The heat from cooking can ruin spices. And if the spices aren't hermetically sealed, the steam will do worse than the heat. A box of tea bags will be ruined in a week.

Now, that aside people DO love their spice racks, so Carry On!

If I were useing plain oak it would be best to buy tambor. Milling the parts for one would be time consuming but finding a source for the proper fabric backing may also take some doing. I will post pics. Robert

Are you going on vacation after you sell it like the guy on ebay did, or are you selling it for some kind of reasonable price! I may be getting lazy again. Or, maybe I'll hold out for someone else to start a cottage industry of spice racks. I can tear mine down to make a pattern for someone if the need it. Just let me know! Kinda busy at work now & will have to wait for next winter to attack it myself.
