We replaced the failed micro in our new-to-us AS with a Samsung combo convection/radiant-element/microwave. It nukes, bakes, browns, roasts, and all that... but the truth is that the BEST biscuits, cobblers, cinnamon-rolls, roasts, etc.... come from the DUTCH OVEN... that my 87 year-old mother's grandmother used! (My Great GrandMaw Tackett!)

(I thought I'd remind you "city-boondockers" what real BOONDOCKING is!)

I would be especially curious about baking biscuits in a Dutch Oven. Did your great-grandmother have a wood stove maybe?

Thanks,

Peter

I use my oven on every trip. Couldn't imagine not having it.

We recently upgraded from a 19' to a 27' so now have a microwave. I think I've used it once - just to see if it works.

Would happily give up the microwave, but would never give up the propane oven.

Lighting is pretty easy once you bleed the line by first turning on a burner for a sec.

BTW - does anyone actually leave the pilot on while they're in the trailer? I always just re-light it.

We leave the pilot on if we are camping for a few days and it's cold enough that we will be using the oven, otherwise, no.

I have not read the previous 485 comments but here is an oven tip that may make your dinner bell ring louder. We see & often at times stop at Cracker Barrels as we travel. He's the scenario, it's 4pm you're getting close to your destination but not ready for dinner but don't want to cook either & then you see that Cracker B sign. Pull in take short break go in order your dinners(s) to go, put them in the AS oven including the CB shopping bag they're in (oven off). At camp set up, remove from bag turn oven on the lowest setting for an hour or so and you got a hot delicious dinner ready at 6:30 or 7PM, not a microwave heated up TV dinner. We love our oven for its versatility.

I've done both "drop" biscuits and "cut" biscuits in the Dutch Oven using wood coals or charcoal. Grandmaw even baked yeast-rolls in it.
I've also made biscuits with nothing more than an aluminum-foil "bakers" tent facing the open-end toward the fire while I fried the bacon and eggs. (From where do you think the term "baker tent" was derived?

Ours doesn't stay on after we turn off the oven. Saves propane, safer.

Mine stays on. Old oven, 73 vintage. I leave it on and make yoghurt in the oven, or raise yeast bread. Just the right temp with the pilot on.

So far, we use our oven mainly to cook pizzas. Last trip, we also heated a big pan of homemade mac & cheese for another lady that was in our camping group. I'm so glad the oven is still in great shape.

I turn off the pilot after use. Good idea to leave it on for bread and yogurt, though. I bet it would be good for keifer, too!

Just made this baby in our oven and it turned out perfect... Crisp crust and all. We've done several now, about 18-20 mins on high heat and you've got a winner😋

Mark and Modern, that looks and sound delicious.

Are there measurements for those ingredients that might go well on the cooking thread.

Hi Mark,
I found your enticing pizza pic after viewing your Bambi seaside campsite.
We love homemade pizza but I have not yet tried in our convection oven.
Was your pizza baked in a convection oven? If so, could you share more details about the settings.
Also, where is the fantastic water front campsite ( it has long been a dream of mine to fall asleep hearing the surf).
Many thanks,
FCloud9

I assumed, since this is a thread about gas ovens, that the pizza was baked in a real propane gas oven!

Sure looks good . . .

I couldn't imagine not having a gas oven. So much of good food is baked.

We use the oven about as often as we use the electric oven at home, which is pretty often. Since 90% of our camping is sans hookups we rarely use the microwave.

We use our oven almost every trip as well. Trader Joes sells frozen croissants in an 8-pack. Take four out and let them rise over night in the oven with the pilot on then bake in the morning as instructed. These croissants are amazingly good considering they are frozen dough. The perfect way to make a BLT.

My home oven is natural gas. I dislike electric. I love the instant heat and instant off = no heat. Only the pan holds residual heat.
