I guess I don't have a problem with it because this is the way Mom lit our old stove back in the day.

It isn't the thermocouple, unless it was bad from the beginning. The problem is the pilot is so far towards the back of the oven it is difficult to hold the knob and light the oven with one person doing it. Barb does the knob, I sit on the floor so I can see the pilot and heat up the thermocouple waiting for gas. Barb holds down the knob to let the gas come through, I hold the match. We tried a butane lighter, but it didn't work any better. If we use the oven every few days, it works right away. If a longer time, it takes longer.
I remember ovens where you light the oven from a hole at the front and it lit the burner and the pilot at the same time (I think)—not the safest way to do it, but it sure was faster. We have a 1931 Magic Chef at home where you do the same thing, except I have to hold a match under the burner to light it—that is even more unsafe, but after using this oven for 24 years, I haven't burned myself yet, just barely.

This last trip I decided to give our oven a go. This time I took a round pizza stone and placed it on the metal tray above the burner. The stone evens out the temperature and make then readings on the knob pretty accurate when compared the oven thermostat hanging from the wire rack. I was able to bake a couple of batches of break n' bake cookies and pizzas successfully. I even put bread on a tray below the burner to make toast. The stone made all the difference. Should be standard equipment in these RV OVENS.

We removed our oven in our remodel. We use a microwave/convection oven instead & an induction cooktop. We don't miss it at all. I have made cakes, cookies, muffins, bread, broiled, etc. We also love all of the xtra counter space it gives us (we store the cooktop in an overhead). We have a 25ft 2001 Safari.

Should you indicate that you never boondock but only ever use full hookups?

Hmmmm, don't remember ever mentioning whether I haven't done boondocking. We have a lovely generator in our towing vehicle. The joy of traveling with a trailer is that everyone can travel in the way they desire and are happiest.

We actually did not want the microwave (well I should say my wife did not want) and the salesman was somewhat surprised when she asked to see the FC with the oven. We have only taken Trixie out on two trips but she used the oven several times and is happy with her decision. And since cooking is not one of my chores I don't really have a problem with it.

Let's see, last weekend I made corn bread, broiled pork chops, made a blueberry cobbler, made oven french fries, and kept pancakes warm until they were all ready. If the oven ever glitched it would be a top priority to fix it.

You can have both a zapper and an oven. The main use of the oven is for garlic bread, but contrary to all safety recommendations, it is a good backup if the furnace fails and it is really cold outside and there's no power for an electric heater. Not something I would want to do and plenty of ventilation is a good idea.
We took out one cushion on the gaucho and put a small cabinet there with a microwave and a printer in it. The cabinet top also serves as a place to put things and keep them off the limited countertop space.
What I hate about the oven is that the pilot light is way at the back of the oven. With a flashlight to see the pilot and all too many matches, I can light the pilot while Barb holds down the knob. I don't think it would be easy for one person to do all that, especially when the trailer has been sitting for a while and it takes a lot of time and matches to light the pilot while the propane slowly makes its way to the pilot. Some people use a butane lighter, but I never had any success with one and use wooden matches.

Love the oven in our 1990 AS but age finally took its toll. Hubby is replacing with a new Atwood with a toaster feature & I know I'll use this each time we camp.

Skitique, is the toaster option propane powered? That would be a major advance in technology to rival sliced bread.

For 8 years, I had a camper with no oven. I baked in a Coleman tin oven on top of a Coleman stove. I was excited to get a trailer with an oven. I baked a pizza in it in my backyard the first night it came home.

We definitely wanted the gas oven in the 2016 Serenity 30' we ordered. The microwave will be used for some things that are appropriate applications for a microwave, but we prefer to use a conventional oven for baking/broiling. The convection microwaves we've had in previous coaches were really noisy and we just prefer baking, broiling in a real oven. For us, having both a microwave and a gas oven is the way to go.

I do. I've made muffins for breakfast for my wife. She's baked a turkey (breast) in it for Thanksgiving. I think the oven is more important than the microwave.

I'll be cooking baked beans in a Dutch oven inside mine today. And finishing a brisket.
