I've used the oven every single time I've taken my rig out. That is exactly one trip so far...

We made biscuits in our oven, and our tent-camping friends were delighted to add that offering to the chorizo, eggs, bacon, and skillet potatoes they were already preparing.

But we also used the microwave-- it was great at heating up water in order to warm bottles for our baby.

As a long-time tent camper, I anticipate doing the majority of my cooking outdoors as well. But it is really nice to have the oven, and I'm sure we'll continue to use it regularly.

I have used my oven, tho I need an oven rack for it. Anybody got an extra one out there? Has to be 16 x 16 1/2" for my small magic chef. I works as well as the new stove I have in my house. I doubt if it was ever used much, it really wasn't even dirty when we bought the trailer, just dusty.
Thanks for the hint on the cookie sheets. I guess it's just a hunt & seek mission. I had the idea of having a friend, who has the equiptment, cut a larger one in half for me. I will re-visit that possibility and post the details if it works out.

Talking 10q!

Well, thanks to you all, this has been another interesting and informative thread. When I get my AS, it's gotta have an oven!

I'll have to see about putting a gas-powered microwave in it, I see.

Oh jeepers, now which message had that juicy-sounding recipe for baked Flamingo in it again?

Just a wee tad off topic:
My big deal is not being able to find baking/cookie sheets to fit the oven. The "camping" ones are toaster oven size and the one I've found that does fit is the smallest in a set of three and I have no use for the other two. A couple of decent 10" X 14" sheets with rolled edges would be my ideal.
A 12 X 12 unglazed terra cotta tile (Lowe's - $1.45) works well on the oven rack. Placing it on the botton of the oven, our tile broke in half quickly while pre heating. It is now on the oven rack and does a pretty good job evening the temperature out. I've not seen a cheap pizza stone as yet and wonder if they are better than the tile.

Happy baking, sue
My standard (13-3/4"x15-1/2") Chicago Metalic sheets fit in my Magic Chef with no problem at all.

I also use a round pizza stone in my oven and have had no problems with it.

Our Wedgie is a bit smaller than the old MC (in fact, I thought " Yipee! I can use the old rack & have two"! , but it was to large) My favorite and most versitile pans are 10-1/2" X 15-1/2" X 1" and are too long. They were my mother's and, of course, "you can't get 'em like that any more" in any size! I will keep an eye out for a reasonabley priced pizza stone - if there is such an animal - but haven't seen any on the cheap yet.

Chicago Metalic makes baking sheets a smaller size than the ones I have. Best sheets I've ever owned. They are alumanized steel, just like the ones my grandmother used to bake with. The small ones are 9.5"x13"

Perfect!! Thanks Cameron!! I check on line to see where I can get them from. If they were good enough for grandma they're good enough for me too!!!

Quarter Sheet Pans

In the commercial cooking world there are sheet pans, half sheet pans, and quarter sheet pans. I believe most of the quarter sheet pans are square or nearly square and will fit that 14 x 14 space in the ovens. Here is a link but just about any restaurant supply (online or in-store should have them.

Sheet Pan - Quarter-Sheet

Hope this helps.

This past weekend was the Southeast-end-of-summer Thang Rally and I baked a Key Lime pie in our convection microwave after we arrived and got set up. Of course I was up until after mid-night baking, but it was worth it. This is the second time I have used the oven myself. Both times the pies turned out great and I got lots of compliments. My wife uses the oven just about every trip to bake bread for breakfast.

I had to steal what little taste I got right off the pie plate from under Nvstysly. It was worth it indeed. MM, that's got to be your signature dish.

We have the combination microwave and convection oven and use both features frequently to warm up, defrost, cook, finish cooking, or defrost food items.

Do those ovens bake, as in make cookies?

Magic Chef saves the day

We were without power for 2 weeks after Hurricane Gustav toppled thousands of trees in Baton Rouge. Funny, you don't realize how many things you can't make without an oven till you don't have one. The 71 Overlander served as an emergency kitchen since the range in our house is all electric. We baked cornbread, biscuits and cupcakes to perfection!
I don't like to use the Magic Chef in the summer because it generates too much heat but I promise that I will never remove it!

Thanks Sugarfoot. That's the only pastry I make and it is Becki's and my favorite desert so I've had a lot of practice over the last 20 + years.

I don't know about cookies, but my wife has made biscuits, casseroles, and "pigs-in-a-blanket" for breakfast on nearly every camping trip in ours.

You do need to compensate by reducing baking time by 25% or reduce baking temp by 25 degrees.

We use our oven quite often while we are out camping. The problem we have had is a constant heat. We solved that by putting 4 fire brick on the lower shelf and that gives the oven a constant heat and it works quite well. It does have a tendancy to "warm up" the trailer but we get through it with our Fantastic Fans.
