Those toaster thingys that you use on the stove work well if you can turn the flame up REALLY HIGH, ie: a camp stove. On a regular stove, they do not work all that hot - tend to dry out the toast well before any browning takes place. We used to use one all the time when we camped using our Coleman camp stove. In the Boundary Waters, where we canoe camp (very rough camping! At least we don't have to dig our own latrines, like the Canadian side does...), we brown bagels in a skillet with a little butter or oil. We don't take bread up because it gets crushed too easily in our food pack.
