Smile Esspresso

We tried a Starbuck coffe maker.Good esspresso, but expensive and got tired to running off to Starbucks to puchase yet anoter 10 cups. So we purchased the real thing, an italian esspesso maker, and well, there is a difference. More work but worth it.
We are still using a Starbucks foam maker, but the result is not consistent, sometimes we get foam at time just hot milk. Anyone else tried one of these?

Talking Coffee Makers

Starbucks is the big M for coffee drinkers. You get fast, consistent quality. Unfortunately, most "barristas" dont know the difference between a lattee, capuccino, or double esspesso machiato. So if you are a minimalist you always know where to go!

Question

"Starbucks is the big M for coffee drinkers."

This is my current favorite: A collapasble siilicon pour over. Essentially a camping chemex. It uses number 4 paper filters and the clean up is simple - throw away the filter and rinse. I make two or three giant cups with one bunch of grounds. I know it's uncool - but it makes dang fine coffee and our high end stainless french press is gathering dust.

This thing collapses to roughly the size of a hockey puck...

Perhaps we're minimalist, don't know what a "barristas" is and the nearest Starbuck is a small town just south of us; the nearest Starbucks is 100 miles away, I think.

Anyone else like Folgers Breakfast Blend?

We have a Starbucks 2 blocks from here. Never darkened their door. Maxwell House is plenty good enough for me. I am a beer snob though.

My wife has issues sometimes with the acid from regular coffee. She brought home some herbal coffee, tried it, and said it was good. She kept trying to kept me to taste it, saying how good it was. Well, after enough coaxing, I finally tried it. It was good! I usually drink my coffee with a splash of heavy whipping cream in it. Fixed the same way, the herbal coffee was good. Here are the three we've tried:

Teeccino Hazelnut Herbal Coffee 11 oz Bag | Teeccino Herbal Coffee / Coffee Alternative
Teeccino Java Herbal Coffee 11 oz Bag | Teeccino Herbal Coffee / Coffee Alternative
Teeccino Maya Chocolate Herbal Coffee 11 oz Bag | Teeccino Herbal Coffee / Coffee Alternative

All were good, but I found that the Chocolate one plugs up a normal coffee filter, and even a wire mesh filter. I'll try it in our french press...it'll probably do well there.

Manual coffee grinder

I am ready for the trip now that our new manual coffee came. It is a Lido 2 made by Orphan Espresso. I now just have to learn the various setting for the proper grinds. I can tell you that the grinder is not made for backpacking as it is heavy.
Here are some pictures.

Addendum to Janet's collapsible drip cone....

I have heard that it works well to use this right into a thermos bottle to keep it hot.

And here I thought that you were referring to " the big M" that used to wander around Maple Leaf Gardens. I'll have to catch up, I guess. Jim

Have not seen much on coffee lately. So I thought I post that after reading "The Barista's guide to Coffee " by Tristan Stephenson( an English Barista) that I decided to buy another coffee maker. This time it will probably be a French press. Just not sure which one.

I am looking at the ESPRO French Press and was wondering how well it works and is the 18oz size sufficient to fill 2 mugs.

Not dissing the French press, but I gotta say, after our recent trip we're still loving our incredibly old-fashioned percolator. Also works great when boondocking. With good beans properly ground, it makes a wonderful brew Every Single Time.

Very simple:
  • 6 tbsp of coarse-ground coffee in the basket and "5" cups of water per the marking on the side of the pot. NO paper filters needed!
  • Bring it to a perk
  • Turn it down as low as possible and continue perking the coffee for 9 minutes. You want an occasional "bloop bloop," not a continuous boil.
  • Pull out the basket / stem assembly
  • Drink
Even works at Denver altitudes.

Mr. Coffee

Spoon in some Foldgers and you've got 10 cups of hot coffee in a flash. Carafe keeps coffee hot until it's all gone. We also carry a percolator for boondocking.

I like that!

I'm going to have to find us a percolator. Haven't had perc'd coffee in a long time.

Thank you.

You're welcome. We've had our LL Bean stainless steel percolator for at least 20 years. It looks like new and is still going strong.

26 pages and not one mention of the Hario syphon vacuum pot? Equiped with a butane burner? Portable, easy to clean, does not require electricity. This is what I use when I want to sip at my Cafe Sur la Butte---my spot at my backyard creek. Heaven!!! Super clean elegant coffee. Besides, terribly fun to watch. Makes me feel like I am in a laboratory--- pronounced la-bore-a-tory !
In my house: Technivorm MoccaMaster 12 cup, and yes, I drink the entire pot...OK, one cup goes to the hubby.
If in an espresso mood: Elektra Italian Copper-brass semiautomatica --yum!
Backpacking: Lexan French Press--lightweight, durable, but really does make dirty coffee (someone did mention the oils and grit not being so good for you)
Trailer---hmm..., not yet decided, most likely a pour-over.
A goodly splash of cream is a must.
