We've been using a stainless insulated french press for years but recently I was boondocking with extremely limited water making washing difficult (french press can be a mess) and tried a pour over. this one folds up flat and uses no 4 paper filters. It worked well and the clean up was super easy GSI Outdoors Collapsible JavaDrip Slim Drip Coffee Maker at REI.com

I have an aluminum dripolator that I got 35+ years ago. Don't know if it still is made. Antique stores or Salvation Army thrift shops might turn one up.

Check on eBay. I have found a lot of good pots and pans there, wish I had looked there before purchasing a new one. It's OK but not nearly big enough. There are some larger Revereware coffee pots there.

Coffee Makers

However, who's got a more conventional design that they have used and had good luck with in their trailer? We'd like something along the lines of your typical Mr. Coffee...something 120V AC. We have a BUNN at home, obviously the BUNN principle is not going to work well in a travel trailer. Sorry for the purists, but we like the convenience. Any suggestions?
We also have the commercial Bunn at home but forget that and try to have a variety with a Mr Coffee 8-12 cup electric drip for a lot of morning coffee and a Bialetti Expresso for that quick on the road over the gas stove cup of coffee. Finally we also have a 50's Revere Ware perk pot but don't try that in the winter time with the trailer closed up. You'll have drips all over from the condensation. Ask me how I know.

We have a small electric coffee maker for when we have power and use a pour over with a filter (Chemex or other type) with water heated on the stove when we don't. The pour over is great because you can toss the filter and clean up is a snap. French presses, we've found, are too hard to clean.

The "K Cup" ones are small and require minimal cleaning, but not ideal if you drink a LOT of coffeee.

Me too. They must have toughened up the glass. We "discovered" the Chemex about five years ago. Simplicity, perfect coffee. If they would market it with a clever European name even the coolest people would use it.

This is awesome! In post #43 of this thread, on February 8th, 2009, the OP, in a subtle fashion, chastised people for continuing to post after they (the OP) had already made up their mind on what coffeemaker to purchase and use. Five and a half years later, here we are, still discussing coffee makers... I love it!

We started out with an old Mr Coffee with a timer, so it was ready when we woke up, but then switched to a percolator, which just seemed to take to long, and then to a French press, which is my favorite cup of coffee. We have a Bunn at the house, but it just takes up too much room in the camper, and is a pain to store.

-Red, loving the coffee talk...

Too hard to clean? You dump the grounds in the waste basket and wipe it with a paper towel. Whats so hard about that?

Gotta rinse them, etc. When boondocking I don't want to waste the water and get coffee grounds down the drain. Like to pick up filter, dump in trash, and I'm done. Like the taste too. Personal preference I guess.

You obviously haven't met my wife. She strips the thing down to its individual parts washes it all and leaves it to me to re-assemble.

I love this thread because it is so similar to the threads regarding tow vehicles. The best coffee pot I have are the ones I own and the best TV is the one I use to tow my AS with.

If you don't believe me just ask me.

After having a few people rave to me about the Aeropress, I got one.

Fail.

It makes weak coffee, which is not allowed in our Airstream or house.

We use Aeropress for Strong coffee....

First you have to start with fresh ground beans...or grind them at the store on the 'fine' setting...

We use only French Roast beans... Two scoops... Add 175 degree water... Mix with paddle for 20 count... Then press directly into cup... Add more hot water to cup till full....

If you use large mugs, start with more coffee in the press till you get 'your' perfect brew...

We've used ours for years to brew strong, black 'Cafe American'...

I've tried numerous options for coffee onboard our Airstream, including a French press and have settled on a solution I thought I would never consider: instant coffee, specifically, Starbucks instant. It is as good as any fresh brewed coffee with the easiest cleanup imaginable. I would recommend purchasing at Costco as opposed Starbucks, it is probably half the price. The only thing to clean is a mug and possibly a spoon. You also avoid the "sludge" at the bottom of the mug that is common with a French press.

I just switched from a 15" ST coffee maker to a Michelin LTX 16" coffee maker... My coffee is now smoother, and safer.
