We like to serve out of the cast iron, whenever possible. Keeps things warm, and looks so nice. Sometimes you need to remove things to invert to serve---like the monkey bread we made this am.

Hi All, I usually coat my DOs either with crisco to keep that wonderful black look or olive oil on the ones that I use frequently. Haven't seen the liners, but I usually line my DO with heavy aluminum foil when I bake my coblers and cakes. Sugar seems to be harder to clean up and I don't want my seasoned garlic, onion and meat DO to impart those flavors into my cakes or cobblers. Some people have a seperate DO just for baking.

Started using my cast iron stuff making spagetti sauce, best ever, not the same in anything else. I may simmer my sauce for an hour or so, but I do rinse it out as soon as possible.

Lodge of Sevierville, TN is having a DEMO in front of their store on May 29, 2010. It will be put on by the TN Dutch Oven group. I will be cooking Aebleskivers and a Strawberry/Rhubarb cobbler. Come on out between 11AM and 4 PM.

Just made my first DO dinner last night in my new Lodge 12" DO! We opted for a chuck roast & fixin's. The roast was soooooo moist and tender. We also cook in a clay pot, and the DO reminds me of cooking in clay.....cut the stuff up, throw it in, set the temperature (or....line up the coals), then return a couple hours later for a delicious meal

8" 2 quart DO

We spent the last week in South Carolina visiting Rod's family. On our way back to the airport in Atlanta yesterday we stopped by the Lodge outlet in Commerce GA. Totally cool store. We picked up an 8" 2 quart DO - first quality. They were on sale at $27.95 (reg $55.95). They had a lot of seconds too, all at ridiculous prices. If we driving home instead of flying I could have done serious shopping! They had a lot of cool stuff.

I was really excited to see the 8" on sale since that was the one piece that I had in mind when we stopped. It's a great size for 2.

Yes, that was a great deal! Love those bargains.

We use our 8" more than anything else, as we are on the road more than we are with others. It is the perfect size for the two of us.

So fun! I think we need more than one Dutch Oven Rally a year, perhaps one in central US in the Spring?

I seriously considered buying a couple more. I know some other DO fans that would have loved to have had one. But - we were flying and schlepping them would have been a real pain the butt.

Yes - I love bargains like that. Particularly when it was something that I was actually going there to get.

I really like the idea of a DO rally too. We did a DO dinner at the Dead Horse Rally (4 Corners Unit) back in February. It was a real success and hopefully we can do it again next year.

Lodge in Sevierville has 10" 4 quart Camp Dutch Ovens on special for $33.50. Stop by and check out some of our other specials. Look me up and I will help you when you come into the store. Lodge is American made and the others are made [new term] off shore.

Do you know of a good publication that would answer questions such as: Where is the best place to store, a dutch oven(s); what about charcoal; what about fire starter; gasoline/butane auxillary stove; and others? DL

We are driving right now, so can't get to my books, but if you are near a Cabela's or other large sporting goods store, those usually have at least one cast iron cooking cookbook. Lodge puts one out, I believe, we also have a Lewis & Clark one.

Might look at this link, too, for lots of good information:

Cee Dub has written a lot of books on the subject. He has lots of stories along with his recipes too. I try and keep my cast iron where the temp doesn't fluxuate too much. Always leave a paper towel between the lid and pot. If you get a rust spot, pour some vegetable oil and salt on the spot and rub the rust out. The salt will be the abrasive and the oil will fill in after the rust removal.

It's Sunday morning and the Dutchstream Rally 2010 was another success. We had 3 Air Stream trailers, 1 Motor home [ours] and 1 SOB. We also had two new people camping with us Roger and Alice [mcair] from Illinois. Welcome.

We also had Joe and Angie from Cleveland, TN. They drove up for the day and cooked a Peach cobbler for Saturday night dinner. They are new to Air Streaming. Welcome

I put Photos of the rally on my web site. dutchstrem4757.webs.com Feel free to check them out.

I hope you all have [or had] a safe trip hope and we will see you at Dutchstream Rally 2011 next year. Also look over some of the other rallies this fall. We might see you at some of them.

Thank you all for a great turn out at Dutchstream Rally 2010.
