Bought a drawer box that is lined with cork and with cork "flaps" that hold knives upright. Slip them in and out. Probably found it at Target or BB & Beyond.

Ditto on the Ikea magnetic strip - I've never had a knife even move on it - it lives on the wall in the kitchen. I keep my magnetic Ikea spice holders on the same strip - there's plenty of room!

The one in my photo above (post 5) started as an IKEA one but I cut it in half so it would fit in my space. Jim

Here is my solution. 12000 miles and nothing has ever fallen off!

airstream "brand" knives

When we purchased our 28' 2009 Ocean Breeze new, we said goodbye to our 10 year old 30' Fleetwood and knew that we would have to eliminate about 2/3 of our stuff due to the limited storage. Everything from the Fleetwood was gone thru and kept or replaced specially for the Airstream. All items were bagged and weighed, too so we could track total weight added.

The background is to let you know how ridiculous we are about weight and space saving measures.

That being said, food prep without good knives is a major no-no! We searched and finally found the perfect set for Airstream that came in a wooden block. Perfect because they are completely silver in color, blades and handles, and have rivets in the handles! Everybody who sees them believes that they are an Airstream special edition!"As much as our counter is small, we live with the block (narrow rectangular footprint) taking up a small amount of counter space for the great looks and functionality. When traveling, we remove the open plastic bin with cleaning supplies that fits perfectly on the left side under the sink (the other side has cutting boards, a waste basket, and a closable plastic "briefcase" dish drying rack that wedges perfectly in) and slide the block full of knives behind the plumbing and in front of the under sink "backsplash." With the plastic bin back in place, nothing moves at all while underway. For lunch on travel days, one of the knives in the set came with a fitted plastic blade protector that snaps on, and this fella lives in the top drawer outside of the plastic utensil holder. When we land for the evening, out cones the block until after breakfast.

I have to admit that we keep ours in the utensil drawer, but if I were worried about good knives bouncing around, I would cover the utensils inside the drawer with a towel or even bubble wrap, just to keep everything in its place.

The really good knives stay at home in a bamboo holder. We take nice adequate knives that are protected by cardboard blade guards. We also bring a Kershaw fillet knife for utility needs. It has a sheath.

kitchen knife storage

This is the knife drawer I built when I built our new kit cabinets .... hold 3 large and 3 small knives plus extra small space.
The other drawer is for cutlery etc.

I also use the magnetic wall strip from Ikea and never once has one come off going down the road. I do have an air-ride equipped moho though so not much moves around in general

(Side note on my precious Bounder one time a knife did fall off the magnetic strip but that rig truly "bounded" down the road lol)

I have the plastic knife hanger inside a cabinet door that Maggie's talking about. Found it at the local RV supply place. Works great.

When you're coking by the fire, you've got bigger worries than those knives!

I know this is about knife STORAGE, so let me just say that Container Store has some really cool knife storage things that consist of gazillions of tiny little plastic straw like doohickies that the knives slip into. Not sure if that's usable in a trailer or not.

But what I really wanted to say is that Ikea produces some first class chef's knives. I bought a stainless chef's knife there that has been great, and it's full tang, too. I have no financial interest (and no cultural, artistic or style interest either) in Ikea, but I love a good, relatively inexpensive knife.

Didn't mean to hijack the posting ...

I don't know why I'm letting it bother me so much but for some reason I can't edit my previous post and my "precious Bounder" was supposed to read "previous Bounder." It may have been my first class A and I have some fond memories but she was hardly precious. Lol. My AS. Now she's precious...actually she's a powerful DP so....I need another word lol. Bambi's are precious.

I use this Wusthof Grand Prix II studio set in the trailer, which came with the very small footprint knife block. The block stays in the upper cabinet over the oven, and I can easily access the knives when needed. If I know I'm doing a lot of chopping, the small knife block fits behind the tiny counter space behind the range (and the range cover still has enough room to be retracted for stove use).Click image for larger version

I am the 'knife sharpener'... and we have simply 'rolled' our 'good knives' in a kitchen towel then stored in the drawer.

Since some of them are CERAMIC, the magnetic thing would not work..

Rolling in the towel also keeps the handles and blades from bumping into each other.
