Chefs knife storage solutions?

How do you guys and gals store your good cooking knives? I was thinking maybe a small knife magnet attached to the cabinet wall adjacent to the stove? The thought of them banging around in a drawer is not a happy thought. Neither do I want to give over valuable counter space to a knife block.

Any other good solutions?

I'd be too nervous about a knife bouncing off and being damaged. In a drawer, wrapped up should do the trick. On "Top Chef" the chefs all store their knives in a knife carrier that's fabric and padded.

For a very cheap way to protect your knives, take a small piece of cardboard and fold it over your knife. Trim off the excess and seal it with some good tape. You can cut one end of it at an angle to match the tang of your knife if needed.

I keep them in sleeves while traveling and put them on a ikea magnetic bar under the cabinet when I arrive at my destination. Did leave one up by accident once and it was still there when we got home...

I found somewhere a plastic knife storage item, made for RV's. that attaches to the inside of a cabinet door.

Has slots to drop the knife thru, dividers, and a bottom ridge to keep anything from sliding thru.

I've found that the Victorinox BladeSafe covers work well, especially since I keep/use a pair of Victorinox knives in the trailer. They're a decent quality knife for a reasonable price.

We use protective sleeves and store knives in a drawer. We have "Blade Savers," which have worked fine for several years. There are different sizes to accommodate the 4 knives we carry: a serrated bread slicer, 9" chef's knife, 6" utility, and a paring knife. We use cheap steak knives, so don't worry about them too much. Also carry a Diamond Chef electric sharpener to keep a good, sharp edge.

I like a knife roll/bag. Stores small and safe, and I have all my knives in one place when I'm coking by the fire.

I have always stored my knives on a wall-mounted magnetic strip and never have had one fall off. Love how it saves on drawer space!

I also use a knife roll, as well as the edge guards that others have mentioned.

I made an oak knife block and finished it to match the oak elsewhere in the trailer. It is mounted on the wall between the window and the spice cabinet. It takes up no space that would be useful otherwise.

To make the block, I used my table saw to cut different depth parallel slots in a block of oak, then glued that block to a larger back board that had room for screws into the wall. Because the wall slants, I put shims in the slots as needed to keep the knives aligned nicely. I have used the block now for over 10 years and it has held up well.

Lift up the silverware tray, put four short plastic drinking cups in each corner of the drawer for the silverware tray to rest on, and you will have created a nice, safe storage compartment for a flat knife storage block similar to the one in post #4, as well as a few other kitchen utensils. Once you determine the height you need, you can make some wood blocks to replace the plastic cups.

Wow, I was thinking no one would bother to reply to this, but you all have some great ideas. I think I will show this thread to my wife and see what she likes best. The knives are mine, but the kitchen is hers.

I use a magnetic strip. I've never had a problem with it. I ordered mine from Amazon.

We use a 24" magnetic Knife holder from Lee Valley. It is an attractive wood piece with a magnetic bar. We bounce along on gravel back roads in BC and never drop anything, not even our chief's knife. Highly recommend it.
