I LOVE my DO's, use them every outing. Especially fond of my little potjie (pronounced "poy-key") cauldron for chilis and bergoos. The aluminum 12" works well for fast bake items like biscuits and pizzas.Click image for larger version

rosdterinfl,

I made a single swing arm rig for open fires. They work great even with my 10qt deep loaded witk Linda's bean soup. It just looks right.

That's a nice setup you have.

I only use Griswold cast iron and have done for 30 years. At one time I had over 300 pieces, but sold down to about 20. Our AS doesn't have an oven but has the combo micro and convection. What to do? My little Griswold #6 Dutch oven fits perfectly. I use it for cooking beans, chili, roasted chicken, pork roasts and many different casseroles. Even breads as well. Of course I have Griswold skillets of different sizes for the stove from #5 to #9. I wouldn't cook without my Griswold cast iron cookware.

Just a reminder, if you can cook it in an oven, you can cook it in a Dutch oven! Tonight's menu: eggplant parmesan...Click image for larger version

Cast Iron Collection & Fire Cooking

About the only thing I wouldn’t do with a DO is use it to boil a pot of water.

We’re not experts just enthusiasts. But a regular is a beef roast sliced thin with gravy made in the pot taters and more.

And looking real good mountain man.

Cute!

I have several 8” ones of varying depths, one with the inverted lid for coals that I carry with the larger one in the Interstate.

I also have a 4” that was a Lewis & Clark commemorative...it had a candle in it, long since burned out.

It’s lidded, tho, and I could heat something in it if I took a notion to.

Griswold did make "camp" Dutch ovens with a lipped lid for coals, but made many more "oven" Dutch ovens with sizes from #6, the smallest to a #13 monster. At one time I had all except the #13 but sold down to #6-#10. Another great Griswold setup is their Double Skillet that can be used as a camp DO, an over DO and also used as 2 skillets. They came in both #8 & #9 and black cast or nickel plate. It's my go-to for camping, very versatile.

Just a reminder that there is also a Dutch Oven Cooking thread with about 450 posts:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f484...ing-40090.html

. . . with many recent posts about the variety of dutch oven designs and sizes, like this one:

This is a nice, multi purpose cast iron thread...what we have, how we use it...or don’t.

It’s all good.

Both of mine with lipped lids are Lodge products, and the only ones I own with legs.

One of my resolutions for this next year is to get back to cooking more in my Dutch Ovens when I am traveling...solo me and Lily don’t need as much, but there’s no reason I can’t bake a loaf of bread, a small cobbler in the 8” or other such yummy thing.

There were several Dutch Oven rallies some years back, but I haven’t noticed these in recent years.

Maybe we need to have one.

Thanks Gary. Too bad it is the advertiser's pic but yes, I have the same one as he made it for me. As I shared, I am learning to cook with cast iron. I have always cooked in the house or on a gas grill and with stainless or non stick. Yesterday I made pink snapper in a cream sauce in my new cast iron braising pan. Learning how it holds heat and cooks is part of it all. I will probably get into it while camping if I ever get out on the road!

Camp Chef Oven Dome

Baked goods with no oven and no charcoal!

Not as brown as in a traditional oven, but otherwise perfectly baked.

https://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-Dut...38116301&psc=1

I have a one burner butane stove I’ve only used once since Doug died, but which would be perfect for this and outdoor use.

Put the dome over your Dutch Oven, skillet, griddle, etc., and you have a convection Oven.
