To heavy for me. So I bought a volcano grill, uses charcoal, propane, or wood. Also has a Dutch oven that fits inside of it. With a Kevlar cover to keep the heat in. And when your done, it folds up into its own bag. Worked great for us. I normally just use charcoal, I've only used propane a couple of time, and never tried wood. It uses about 15 pieces of charcoal at a time.

Mini Max a no go

I've used Eggs for many years and have a Large, Medium and Mini (not Mini Max). There is nothing like cooking on the eggs when comparing texture and flavor of the food...nothing comes close for me...however they are delicate when moving and only the mini would be suitable but still heavy and you don't want to break one as parts ain't cheap.
I will most likely take my mini when I do get the trailer on the road. Been on the back burner for a while now as I am moving and fixing both places.
For me I will make the proper storage when traveling to allow me to bring the mini.

We've traveled with a BGE MiniMax for 3 years now.
It just completed a 13,000 mile trip around the USA in the back of our Ram 2500 with no issues. In fact it's been in the back of our truck for some 30,000 miles now without a single crack or issue. All we do is wedge it between our Yeti and the side of the pickup.
As for cooking on a BGE, there is nothing like it once you learn how to use it.
You can easily hold it to a low 150 degrees for a long cold smoking or literally get the surface of the grate to 800 plus degrees or anywhere in between. It is incredibly versatile.
We will haul it with us until we can no lift it's fairly substantial weight.

We take our MiniMax on almost every trip. Just had to get them to send me new handles as I almost lost it during a transfer when the previous design handles fell apart in my hands...

I can handle the weight by myself, but my wife often pitches in - it's an easy 2 person move. Heavy duty, water proof tote with charcoal and accessories.

Can't beat it for burgers, steaks, or bigger items like a butt or turkey breast. We smoked a turkey breast for thanksgiving while camped in the Smokies last year. Love it!

I'm coming in late to the discussion. I've been using a Mini-Max when camping and as an addition to our XL BGE for a few years. We use a 10" grill pan with it and it works great. It is heavy, but IMO very worth while. It's worth while because of the quality of the food it cooks.

Hi

How do you secure your BGE (and the ceramic inside it) in transit? I already know from experience that the ceramic does not bounce when you drop it ....

I have a BGE cover over top of mine. It sits in the bed of the truck against the tailgate and close to one side. I run a strap over the hinge to hold it down and against the tailgate. I put the daisy wheel inside on top of the grill, and keep the ceramic lid on top. I've not had any issues so far.

I used to put card board between the layers but after consulting the BGE group on FB, many of whom compete with their various size BGE's regularly and are constantly transporting them - I decided against any special packaging.

I know some people have gone so far as to build a custom box for the ceramic interior pieces for transport.

If I do anything it will be to add the heavy duty rubber feet which will dampen things quite a bit.

I haven't used any padding around the fire ring yet. It's probably a good idea, I just haven't done that yet. The container is more of a medium size garbage can with slots cut to secure the mini-max. I also have a second container with the bag of charcoal and cooking supplies.

We have the original BGE Mini, and carried it in a large Rubbermaid carrier, secured but with no interior packing. Both interior ceramic pieces cracked in half during our last cross country trip. Surprisingly, our local Ace replaced them without charge. We now stuff the egg interior with bubble wrap and hope for the best - so far no further problems. Joe

not $1800 that's XL

MMAX is around $600

only worth it if you can appreciate the difference which is massive.

Hi

We sort of have "one of each" in the BGE line. I would not want to haul around an XL and all the support gear (stand / plate setter ....) for it. It was enough of a chore just getting it set up on the porch. The little guys are about the largest I would even attempt to haul on a regular basis.

Big Green Egg Mini Max - Mounted to Airstream

I carry a Mini-Max mounted to the hitch frame of my 1970 AS International Ambassador 29. Works great and swivels out for cooking, then stows for towing. No need to ever lift it again. I tow with a Ram 1500. See photos and mount design below.

Question from a non-egg owner. If I read BGE's website correctly, the small has the same grilling area (13") as the minimax, but is taller and weighs only about 5 pounds more. Both are priced the same at $599. Assuming the extra height is not a problem for storage/transport purposes, wouldn't the small's larger interior space help with temperature control?

The MX comes with a really nice carrying handle. The small does not.
