Best Portable Grill?

I refill by 1# bottles from the 20# one at home using the refill adapter. It saves money, refilling form the bigger tank, and saves throwing away a reusable product.

I bought mine locally at Allied trailer supply, great local place, but here is the fitting:

You may be able to find it at Lowe's/Home Despot [sic] but I didn't look.

You might want to check into the legality of doing this - if that is a concern to you.

I'm not really clear on it - I have seen different statements. And again it may be different between the US and Canada.

Seems to me I have seen the adapters for doing it on sale in
the US ( Maybe Harbor Freight?) but I don't think I have ever seen them offered for sale in Canada.

Must admit I have been tempted - I think the adapters are maybe $30 or so - but I don't use enough of the small bottles to really be too concerned.

I generally take along a 20# bottle to connect to our portable bbq when camping.

I bring my 20# for use with my fire pit anyway so same here - but that sounds neat to refill the small ones if that is legit

It sounded interesting, but I've just looked at a bunch of Youtube videos and it looks like quite the operation to me - also, propane does make me nervous. There have been too many accidents at filling stations, one here in Toronto, for this to be in my comfort zone.

I recycle empty bottles at a specialist collection station, so not too worried about the environmental impact of using them.

Refilling the small disposable bottles is illegal. They aren't designed to hold up to being refilled and used over and over. That being said, I have done it, but I never refill them more than once. I found the valves are prone to leak after a couple of refills. Bad news in a vehicle.

Illegal is what makes it so desirable. It is not something I would recommend for an english or music major.

This may be true in South Carolina but is legal in most states using one of the refill valves described above. That said, the disposable tanks are not DOT approved for refill so they cannot be refilled legally at a propane filling station, and the refilled tanks cannot be legally transported.

I have had the small tanks leak when you unscrew them from the grill or stove etc.

new to the Air Forum, but have been a boater most of my life. Before you purchase an outdoor grill go to Boaters World or a Marine Supply Company. They have many great grills to choose from, many operating off the small gas bottle.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. Surprisingly, I picked up a portable grill from Sams that works way better than I expected. It's called "The Sportsman's Series". I was leery that it would not get hot enough to sear a steak, but it will. I read all of the reviews and for the most part they were 5 stars. I am not disappointed. I also bought a Sizzle Q stainless steel griddle. I was able to cook 12 slices of bacon at a time and fry 6 eggs at a time and make 8 slices of toast. I also have a Cobb that works well for pork chops, salmon and vegetables, but not so good for steak and hamburgers. With the addition of the portable propane grill and the griddle, I have the perfect outdoor kitchen.

Off we went on a week long trip and I forgot the grill! Phooey. Found a table top Charbroil at Target. Works great! Gets hot fast, nice even heat, and the regulator is removable. About $90.

Coleman road trip, the red one. Bought a 11# tank and hose adapter for fuel. On second season with one refill of the tank. Can use small direct hookup tanks if you want or need to. Lid is not very high so that is a problem for taller items, but how often do we cook a roast? The heat--great. Our main priority is lots of heat to sear and fire off steaks fast. It's bit big for carry in the 30 FC trunk, but TV is a pickup so that is where it travels.

The Q1000 is too big to carry around unless you have a lot of extra room. It rattles like mad in the back of a car. We may end up using it at home more than anything. I would prefer something that becomes a square box that will allow it to sit on top of something or something on top of it. It is only portable in that it can be moved without two people but it is an ungainly rattling thing. It is much more bulky than it should be. I think the $20 Walmart one was more practical. I think the Q will work fine to replace the roll around home grill. It is just a little more portable than one of those. It is too heavy and needs a handle so you can grab it with one hand.

I'm definitely old fashioned & would choose the Lodge hibachi-style grill that you can use charcoal or wood, or both.

I have the same one. Works great! Grilling a couple of steaks on it as I type this. I run it with a couple of extension hoses and an adapter off of the trailer tanks.

Dont want to start a debate on the merits of charcoal vs gas but i deffinately prefer charcoal. I have found the choices for portable grills that will fit in my outside storage compartment on my 310 MH to be quite limited. Went with a Webber Go Anywhere table top. Its just my wife and I so dont need a lot of grill space. Its been doing the job well on our first three outings with it. Its got the good Webber air control so that helps when cooking a bit slower for chicken and such.

The Lodge grill is really nice and I would like to have one too. If you're camping in California though, many campgrounds are now only allowing propane grills (no charcoal or wood fires) during fire season because of the extreme fire danger, so keep that in mind.
