Best Dutch Ovens
I'm looking for a 12 quart Dutch Oven and Lodge no longer makes this size. Has anyone had a good experience with another brand they would recommend?

They still make the 12 "deep" Dutch don't they? Though that's not the best thing to do biscuits/cornbread etc.
Looking in thrift stores for used cast iron can work out very well. $1.00 or $2.00 per piece. Of course you've got to scrub, oil and re-season each piece which is a chore, but you can find good stuff.

Lodge... look in thrift stores or on eBay. I don't have one that large, have several of the smaller sizes. I tried a Camp Chef, it went back to where it came from, poor casting quality. There are some other older US manufacturers of cast iron out there, just have to look closely at the quality of a used one.
Barbour makes one, not sure of the quality, haven't seen one in person.

I think Lodge just stopped making the 12 quart model, but phone around because someone might still have some stock. I know a fellow who just got one from a local shop. As mentioned, check the thrift stores and look for cast iron made in the US or Canada. McClary's was a Canadian company that made very good cast iron. Look for Lodge, Wagner, Griswold, etc.

Looks crazy expensive!
Griswold made good cast iron, (I have several antique pieces) but I don't know if they ever made the inverted lid ones to use with charcoal.

Hi Blanche, we have a 12 quart Lodge camp oven. 5 inches deep. Used probably 4-5 times. We've been thinking of getting a smaller one. If you think you might be interested, let me know and we'll bring to the Canopener for you to look at it.

Check your local "country" hardware stores - much less expensive than your kitchen specialty shops.
Here in VA. Beach about all we have left are the big orange boxes - yet if I visit about any small town in VA or Eastern NC I find a "tru-value" partner store with a bunch of old timey stuff like hog castraters, barb wire cutters, etc. Favorite in the world - Amish country stores with lots of "plain" merchandise.

Yes!
We have been known to stop in small towns just to go thru their hardware stores.
Remember that corner hardware store in Floyd, VA, Paula? All the usual, wonderful items, plus the locally handmade trays and bowls carved out of cherry. Love them.

12qt is a big oven other wise called a 16inch oven. You can feed a lot of people with it I know we have 2. Use mainly when we are cooking for a large group usually Boy Scout Crew and troop or at a Dutch Oven gathering. A 12 inch will feed a family easily.

You'll get a lot of football-related links. The Bayou Classic is played every year in New Orleans.
So search "bayou classic -football".

The Bayou Classics are made by Barbour, can't determine if they are Chinese origin or? They look decent in the pictures, but then again so do the Camp Chef and I have had problems with those.

Could someone let me know which size dutch oven would work best using the Volcano grill ??? Don't need a real large on though there's only 2 of us and on occasion for a few more. Haven't gotten the grill yet just thinking for down the road.
Thanks all, Happy New Year

OK Bayou Classic is something about football? Guess that tells you something about my football knowledge. Also did that at work today on the "smart" phone, needed a 14 yr old to do the copy paste junk.

I have a Le Creuset 13 quart dutch oven which I mainly use for making jellies and jams. Great product, they are expensive however.

We have a Volcano and dutch oven cook. A 12" will fit nicely in the Volcano. For ovens smaller than a 12" you insert a metal plate that comes with the Volcano. The smaller dutch ovens sit on the metal plate. The 12" doesn't use the plate as the top edge of the Volcano holds it up.
I talking diameter size (12") not quart size. A 12" diameter holds 8 quarts. The 12 quart size has a 16" diameter.
Dutch oven meals are great; I've never had a bad one.
Happy New Year!
