In the next week or two my bride and I are going to take home a 1989 25' Excella. At what point do A/S,s be concidered classic or is she just an old trailer?

Technically its a sliding ruler of any trailer 25 years old or older... But realistically a true classic is a signature series trailer (1960-1963) or older...

The Vintage Airstream club limits their membership to trailers that are 25 years or older. The number of segments in the hemisphere endcaps are one indication of generations of Airstreams. To some, the 13 segment endcaps are classic. Go to the Vintageairstreamclub.com website to see how the designs evolved. For Motorhomes, classic usually refers to aluminum bodied units.

In Ohio they become historical at 25 years. We got historical plates in 2012 for about $35 and they are good until 2051, the year I turn 100. I think I will stop towing by then.

When I sold my '89 I thought it would fit into the Classic category at 25 yrs which would be this year....non-the-less you have purchased one of the most desired models according to P&S Trailer Service. We loved our 89 but thought it wasn't big enough so we went for a Wide Body. Wish I'd kept the 89 even with its very few issues.

No Airstream is just an old trailer.

Vintage Trailer & RV Events

The various vintage trailer/RV rallies & events can each have a different set of ages/dates based on who is running them. This can range from production dates in the 1960's (e.g.: pre-1969) & earlier, to 1972 & earlier, 1979 & earlier, rolling 20, 25, 30 or 35 year dates. It's really all over the place & you have to check each event's rules.

Otherwise, US-DOT has a rolling 25 years rule for importing vehicles without having to modify them to US standards - so your `89 is coming up on that.

Likewise, each state has differing rules on when they become a "Classic", "Vintage", "Historical" ("Hysterical" ;-) vehicle & eligible for that state's specicial license plates/registration. Be careful, because some of them limit those plate to only go to/from shows & not in general use, so you just keep regular plates in those cases.

In CA you can find & substitute YOM "Year Of Manufacture" plates - i.e.: a set of plates (2 matching plates for cars/trucks/RVs or 1 for trailers/motorcycles) onto your vehicle up to the 1969 MY or year of first registration (i.e.: for early 1970 models first registered in `69).

For example, we got a 1956 series Black letters on Yellow plate with the correct 1960 year sticker & replaced the 2012 issued "modern plate" on our 1960 Avion (1961 MY) since it was first registered in summer 1960.

Just like with classic, vintage, antique, etc. cars - it is all over the place - as you can tell from the other answers above & my post! So I hope this makes it as clear as mud!

I'd say consider yours a classic as soon as it hits 25 & go from there - damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

Cheers!
Tom

WOW, Back in 89 I remember getting home from work a little before 5 and grabbing the remote to watch the Giants in the world series on TV and then the house started to shake like crazy and a minute later the TV went out and then the power went out. The Airstream was about 9 months old at the time and sitting in Boise waiting for her first owner to fall in love with her and take her home. Seems like yesterday. She's been with her owner for the last 26 years. Lots of TLC. Now we've become the caretakers to this great lady and hopefully will honor all Airstream owners by loving and caring for this great piece of American heritage.

Pokey, you'll love it! And, (I suggest) join the Vintage Airstream Club and go to a Vintage rally. You might find (as we did) that one of the nearest might be far away (in our case it was at Wenatchee). It was a "VAC" rally and we were new owners of an old Airstream (that was also sold to its first owner in Boise, too, BTW). At that rally we found there were Airstreams of all kinds - B-vans, motor homes, even newer AS Sprinters - because everyone welcomes people with common interests, and no one is turned away because "Well, your Airstream is only X-years old..." Now, I'm sure there are some who count years but I think you'll find most are pretty accepting. So, to some people, an old beater pickup from decades ago is just an old truck. To others, it's just a classic truck that hasn't been restored yet. For every "old Airstream" sitting in a field there's one of the same age sitting in a campground this weekend with a family sleeping in it and roasting marshmallows by a firepit as the stars come out. That family might be in the VAC or they might just be outdoors people trying to teach their kids there are better ways to spend a weekend then watching TV....
So, whatever you do - enjoy your new "piece of American heritage!"

I see that 2 ways-
1. A "Classic" is a vehicle 25 years old which can have an "antique" or "vintage" vehicle plate.
2. A "Classic" is a brand new trailer which wears the name "Classic". I think the name "Classic" on a new trailer is to convey a style of furniture, cabinets, and upholstery- like it reminds you of your grandpa's trailer. A trailer 25 years old may be a "Classic", but is also vintage, antique, and old (nothing wrong with that).

The 89 Excella that we are becoming the loving caretakers to is ALL original. One of the many little things that I have noticed is on all the drawer and cabinet pulls are stamped with "Airstream" in the handle. The other thing that is with this trailer, are the original sheets that were with the trailer 26 years ago and never used when bought from the Boise dealer. The drivers side awning, rear awning and main awning are all original and in as new condition. Does anyone know if sheets came with Airstreams from the factory or was this a dealer option?

I don't know the answer to your question on the sheets, but that is really cool that they are still there with the trailer. It sounds like you got a very nice trailer! We have an '88 Excella 25' and have enjoyed it for the past 5 years now. It was all original, but we did not love the mauve mini blinds, faded curtains and upholstery, so chose to update it to our taste. We joined the Vintage Airstream Club and they consider 25 years old to be vintage. There is an Excella Classic model but that is not what you are referring to. In any case, yours is now considered "vintage"...I know you will enjoy it!

My 2013 did not have sheets. It did have a bedspread and pillows. The sheets would be nice if they are tailored to fit the bed with the corners lopped off.

Sheets are always an extra but might have been negotiated in the original purchase at the dealership. We purchased ours from AS Factory store. BTW they are not cheap but the fitted sheets stay put whereas the regular fitted sheet pops out on the rounded corner. They are also excellent quality. The color coordinated bed cover and shams are part of the trailer package.
