It's been revised to 2 dead. Many trailers hit by trees, several toppled sideways or even upside down. 36 injured a few critically. 1328 people on the campground which has over 700 sites.
Pretty Awful, but it's lucky that more weren't killed and injured. A tractor-trailer overturned on Route 13, the main artery up the Delmarva peninsula. For many who don't know, Virginia is divided like Michigan. The mainland and the "eastern shore" which is also called Delmarva (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) peninsula. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel replaced the old ferry system which kept the two halves together. Cherrystone campground is just north of the Bay Bridge Tunnel.
The tornado warnings were issued with just seconds between it and the hit. Apparently there had been a waterspout on the bay before the tornado hit. Waterspouts are generally not nearly as dangerous as land based tornados but the speed picks up drastically if one comes ashore.
Only 3 patients were evacuated to Norfolk area hospitals, the remainder are being treated at the local "Northampton Hospital". Holy crap, they just announced that this storm was an "EF 1" a WEAK tornado.
Lots of prayers going on around here.
Paula
