Trip Planning

Hi All,

I'm planning 2014 trips. I'm going to be headed from Arkansas to Montana and I'm thinking of going north through Missouri, Iowa/Nebraska, South Dakota etc. I'd like to hear about roads like 71 thru Missouri and I-90 etc. All tips and warnings welcome.

Steve

We make a trip to the Kansas City, MO area once or twice a year to see family for the last 20+ years. Most of the time we take I-90 from Montana all the way to Sioux Falls, SD then head South through Iowa to Missouri & reverse course on the way back. This past September we took the Interstate all the way across NE and quickly reminded ourselves why we quit doing that. Too much semi-truck traffic and I swear there are some crazies behind the wheel of those rigs. (That's a story in itself) A lot of the construction in IA is complete and their speed limit has been raised in recent years. I-90 though SD, WY & MT is very good. You must realize in the afore mentioned states, especially MT that there are 2 seasons, Winter and construction. Most states in our area have the 511 phone number for road conditions and construction reports. MT also has their DOT website for info and it is Mdt.mt.gov. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions about MT and I'll try to answer them for you.

Thanks Salsa Master. Do you have any favorite overnight places on that route? And how do you like Montana? We've been eyeing real estate there.

Haven't camped along that route for a few years. However there are small towns in that part of the country that have full hookups in some nice little campgrounds. Should probably be able to google them along the route.

As far as Montana goes, I love the area I'm in and have been here since getting out of the service in 1977. Winter hit us last night and there is snow on the ground, 20* and wind. We are no officially in our second season, WINTER. lol Winters can be tough in this part of the country and if you like to ride motorcycles like I do, the wait can be excruciating at times.
