Replacement Mattress

We just finished our maiden voyage with our 2013 27' FB Eddie Bauer and it was a delight. We inadvertently wound up boondocking for three days and were impressed that the solar panels kept things up and running and even charged up my computer several times.

One of the few disappointments was the mattress quality. We both wound up with back aches and a couple of headaches. The Airstream Store has a replacement mattress with two inches of memory foam for $600 while Rocky Mountain Mattress has an 8" memory foam for about $785.

The Rocky Mountain site has a bunch of glowing reviews, but the Airstream Store has nothing, positive or negative. Anyone have experience with their mattresses?

Mattress Inc.

Have 1999 with Safari with 15 year old mattress's. Bought new ones from Mattress inc 8" mem foam for about $800.00 for 2 with shipping . Funny how they were shipped in two 37 pds boxes, mattress was rolled up shrinked wraped in a roll. After unrolling and cutting shrink wrap they were full size in about 45 mins. My wife has a disc problem in lower back and I have had back fusion surgery. The mattress after a 2 weeks trip to Utah we sleep great.

We went to a Comfortaire bed and like it very much. Hate foam mattresses so we skipped those.

Given the original mattress in our Airstream is pretty terrible, we have no interest in buying a replacement mattress from Airstream. A comfortable bed is clearly not one of their priorities.

We threw a memory foam pad on top of the stock mattress, which works for now. When we finally give up on that, we'll go with a 3rd party product. Perhaps the Denver mattress folks. We'll see when we get there.

If you have not already you might want to look at this site. The Mattress Underground - Your best source for information on mattress brands, materials, and choices. It has a lot of good info. As to Rocky Mountain Mattress; we bought from them about year ago and have been quite happy with the mattres.

I slept on mine 1 night, then went to a mattress store and bought a regular queen pillow too (not RV queen), now sleep like a rock...it's a little tight, but, totally worth it!

We installed a 8" modified queen from Rocky Mountain Mattress to fit into our 25FB and liked the mattress. We installed 8" twins from Rocky Mountain into our Classic and have been pleased. If we like the experience on a 10" Rocky Mountain mattress that is awaiting the completion of the modifications to the 23D, we may order 10" twins about 6" longer for the Classic.

We also have their 12" mattress in a king size in out home. Sleep well every night.

Interested to follow this thread. Have a 2016 Classic on order. Wondering if we need to go ahead and replace the mattress day 1. We sleep on a Tempurpedic at home and love it.

For the past ten years, my wife and I have always camped with two children. Our two boys are not so young anymore. Leaving the our two boys at home on recent camping trip, I temporarily removed the twin mattresses from our 1986 31' Sovereign and installed the 20 year old Comfort Select air mattress that I sleep on at home. When I woke up the first morning in the campground, it took me several seconds to remember that I was in my trailer.

I am quite sure that once the boys are no longer involved in camping, a Comfort Select mattress will be a more permanent fixture in our Airstream.

A memory foam mattress also appeals to me, however, the light weight of the air mattress is a benifit.

The new 30' Classics since the 2015 model year have a totally custom mattress that is half as thick near the top so it will bend easily and raise the head area. That may kill the deal for most third party mattress manufacturers.

Wow, glad to come across this thread. I have serious back issues, love my new AS but hate wakeing up daily with a sore back. We have twins, where can I buy a quality mattress that forms to the AS "curve" ?

To us... our RV is our "home", when traveling. Life is short. Our RVing time is limited. The reason we RV is to have our "home" with us whenever we travel. That means comfort, pleasure, enjoyment, and the things we like to have with us when traveling. We are not weekend campers, we are RV travelers and often spend weeks or months living in our RV.

First thing we do with a new RV is ditch the mattress and replace it with the most comfortable mattress that we can find. We are willing to have a mattress which may be slightly oversized for the space in the coach, in favor of supreme comfort for the 1/3 of every day we spend traveling with the coach. We couldn't care less about having an "RV curve" on the corners of the mattress. It may cramp the bedroom a little more, but this is a small trade off for being able to have a superb quality mattress.

Personally, I would skip the Airstream mattress store, do some careful measurements in your coaches' bedroom, find the best/most comfortable mattress that you can which will fit in your coach, dress it with the most luxurious sheets and pillows that you are able to put together (modal sheets-100% beech- in our preference), and then sleep and dream magnificently during the 1/3 of your life spent traveling with your coach.
