We bought a Sharper Image reversible memory foam mattress topper because the original AS mattress was so terrible. We haven't trimmed it to fit the five yet but it has made a world of difference. We liked it so much that we bought one for home even though we already loved our home mattress. The best part is that if one of us gets up in night or has to get up early you can't feel the person getting up.

Our 2013 25FB International received an 8" Rocky Mountain Mattress (cost $635 on 12DEC2012) to replace the stock 7" mattress. We had ordered the Airstream store 600 thread cotton custom sheets for the stock mattress, but they fit the 8" mattress perfectly and would have been really loose on the factory 7" mattress.

Before the trailer arrived, we had the 8" Rocky Mountain Mattresses made for the twin beds in our 2014 Classic (cost was $1,158 for both in June of 2013) along with the Airstream 600 thread sheets. If we knew then what we know now after the trailer arrived, the mattresses could have been perhaps five inches longer to better fit the space in the Classic and thicker. We might even splurge in the future and go to the 10" thick mattress the next time.

We ordered the 12" Rocky Mountain mattress (cost $1,825 on 15 JUN 2015 included two sets of custom sheets, pillow cases and bed pad) for the king bed at home and should have ordered the 14" thick one as I miss-measured the height needed. Their custom sheets are fitted on the bottom and also can have a fitted pocket for the foot of the top sheet so it does not pull out at night.

We have a custom shaped 10" Rocky Mountain mattress (cost $1,825 on 15 JUN 2015 including two sets of 600 thread cotton custom snapped sheets, pillow cases, bed pad and pillows) still rolled up in the home garage and will put it and the sheets into the 2015 23D International Serenity trailer hopefully next week when all the modifications are completed and I can pick it up in Paradise, TX and tow it home.

You can call the Airstream factory (phone 937-596-6111) and ask for customer service to send the two drawings for the twin bed mattress for your specific trailer. They will needed the last six digits of the VIN number to find the correct details. There is a large overview drawing and a detailed measurement drawing for the large radius.

Contact Andrew Melchoir (1-866-733-3132) for questions and a quote concerning Rocky Mountain Mattress products and their linens made to fit the weird Airstream shapes.

Serta 3" Cool Gel Mattress Topper

While preparing for a two week Colorado trip (earlier this summer) one of our concerns was possible discomfort while sleeping on the stock mattresses.
Realizing that the (twin) mattresses are placed directly on plywood and not on top of box springs, there needed to be another layer of cushion.

Having waited too long to order a better quality (curved) mattress I opted for a 3" thick, Serta Cool Gel mattress topper. Fortunately, Kohl's department store had them marked down 50% and then honored a coupon for additional savings.
Because two twin mattresses ( 34"+34"=68") are 8 inches wider than a Queen (60") I purchased a King size topper. I used each mattress for a template and cut the topper with a sharp knife.
Fortunately, our fitted sheets still fit with the extra 3 inches of soft padding.

The best part is they are so comfortable. The only slight annoyance is the 3" topper tends to slide off the mattress. I haven't resorted to securing them with duct tape and bungee cords but eventually I'll look for some elastic cord, Velcro, or other method that is probably available at a sewing/ fabric shop.

Sweet Dreams and Goodnight!

If the mattress is full thickness memory foam, how do you deal with the increased weight? We have a 25 FB and a '12 150 Ford Eco boost.

We also have their 12" mattress in a king size in out home. Sleep well every night.
Okay, it seems you have extensive experience here so, if you would be so kind to share the types of mattresses I would be eternally grateful.

Are they full foam/poly/latex etc, box springs with layers, what type of layers, gel foam (how thick). We are very interested in getting two twins and we have attended RV shows and scrubbed the internet but are still uncertain on type of mattress.

We would like to get as close as possible to our soft-sided water bed we have at home. They are also referred to as hybrid water beds. It's a conventional 9 inch deep water bed but, instead of a board frame it has conventional sides with mattress ticking all the way around. The pillow top is about one inch thick which knocks down much of the heavy waves experienced with a conventional wooden water bed.

I can't get a lick of sleep which makes camping no fun.

Any info offered would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard

When I woke up the first morning in the campground, it took me several seconds to remember that I was in my trailer.

I am quite sure that once the boys are no longer involved in camping, a Comfort Select mattress will be a more permanent fixture in our Airstream.

A memory foam mattress also appeals to me, however, the light weight of the air mattress is a benifit.
Hi. Thanks for the info.
Are these beds the ones that dial-up firmness with a powered kind-of pump? If so, how would that work? We have forward twin beds.

Thanks.
Richard

We're having a mattress made in a factory in Brockton, MA. They are using our Airstream mattress as a template. I'll update more when we get it.

If you can wait a week or two, I will update. They have our old mattress and said its only 7 days to manufacture, we are picking a thickness, etc. It is being sold direct to us and quotes are around $685.

A waterbed in an Airstream would be a lot of weight. If in the back the trailer, it could unload the tongue weight and make the trailer to unstable to tow, or in the front, overload the tow hitch receiver of the towing vehicle.

Rocky Mountain mattresses are fabricated using foam of different densities depending on the thickness. They made ours to the Airstream mattress drawings.

Here is the link to their website were all is explained:

I have some severe back issues and our mattress is extremely important, both at home and in our rig. The number of choices out there is daunting to say the least. We have slept on a Tempurpedic for the last 10 years or so, at home, with pretty good success dealing with morning back pain. But, in our Airstream we had a good quality older conventional inner spring mattress and it was killing me on the road after a couple days of travel. Soooo, we went on the search for a new mattress for the rig and ended up buying a Ghost Bed direct from the factory. Queen size and they included two of their pillows as part of the deal......we really love it, so much that we ditched the Tempurpedic in the house and bought another Ghost Bed. So far so good and it's made a very noticeable difference in reducing my back pain in the mornings, both home and on the road in the rig.

Price was very reasonable compared to other options, I think we paid around $800 per mattress shipped to our door.

Buying a mattress is so frustrating these days with the incredible amount of choices out there. Plus it's such a personal choice that recommendations from others really don't mean much to each individuals needs and preferences.

I would advise that if buying over the internet, pay close attention to return policies, shipping and the like. With the Ghost Bed, they give you a 100 day free return period when bought direct through the company so we felt pretty well protected should we not like it. The price was just about the same as Amazons but there were some restrictions on the return policy if we bought it through Amazon.

All I can say is we are very pleased with the mattresses and they have been a true blessing in regards to my back pain issues. GOOD LUCK! Hope you find the right one on your first try!

Mike
