Reclaimed Wood Dinette Tabletop

We purchased a new house and the previous owner left behind a couple of broken down Adirondack chairs with foot stools. I was going to haul them to the dump when I realized they were made of teak. So I decided to try and reclaim the wood. Tore them apart, cut the rotten ends of each board, and ran the boards through a planner to remove the weathered and damaged areas. Then edge glued the boards with biscuits to create a new table top to replace the formica one in our Bambi.

Great idea.

Note that you can find a variety of finishes for teak that will preserve the brown color and keep it sealed. One of my favorites is an oil-type finish that soaks in and preserves the wood.

If you have scraps left, and lots of patience and skill, you could build a set of lattice duckboards for your shower...

If it were up to me I'd do just that. However we had beautiful teak grates in the showers in our boat and my wife got tired of having to clean hair, soap scum, etc. out of them so she has vetoed the idea of putting that in the Bambi. Of course, being male I never noticed such things.

I think I might make something to go on top of the deck that the toilet sits on though. The wood adds a sense of warmth to the trailer.

This is beautiful! What is the weight difference between the formica and teak table? I wanted to replace my formica table with Corian (to match my kitchen counters) but the service tech at the factory said it would add too much weight.

So what did you use to finish it? Looks awesome and been thinking about doing something similar for our flying cloud, I love wood working, but hate staining/finishing...

Do you have any pics of the bottom side and how did you put it together. I have some different types of wood that I would like to build something like this for my Sovereign.

For those that want to follow in KellogKid's footsteps, retro metal banding can be applied to the edge, very cool! http://www.heffrons.com/retro/banding.html

The finished table top ended up weighing slightly less than the OEM formica one.

I also hate finish work. I did not put any stain on it. Simply sanded it and then a few coats of oil based Varathan. Sanded with 400 grit after 3 coats and then put another couple coats on after that,

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of the bottom or the assembly process. I cut groves in the edges of the boards with a biscuit cutter and put wooden biscuits in them and glued the boards together and clamped. Here is an article on how to use a biscuit cutter and biscuits to joint two pieces of wood.

https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-...cutter-3536875

After the glued together pieces had dried, I glued a piece of 1/4" birch plywood to the bottom to add strength and assist with structural integrity. The plywood is even with the teak on the one edge that butts up against the side of the trailer. On the other three sides the plywood is set in from the edge of the teak by an inch. That way the plywood is not visible unless you lay on the floor and look up. That also gives the bottom a nice smooth surface should you brush a knee against it.

KelloggKid, Thanks for the info, it told me how you fastened it all together and using the plywood for a stiffener. I have a curved couch and wanted to use this as the section for the bed. Your table is beautiful with the different shades of wood.

We are planning on doing something similar to this. Thank you for your post.

My question: do you trust the strength of the new table top to hold someone sleeping on top of it?

That would be my concern too, though the table looks lovely, and looks to have plenty of strength when used as a table.

I built our replacement table with use as a bed in mind, with the wood running in the appropriate direction for that, and oak battens under the table to provide additional support when used in the table configuration. Wood used for the table is walnut, cherry, curly maple, and wormy maple (aka "ambrosia maple").
