Queen Bed

I have a rear bedroom with a queen bed in a classic 34. The mattress is a short queen that is 60" by 75". I'm thinking of replacing the mattress with at regular queen (60" by 80"). Has anyone done this? Do you have enough room to walk around the bed or does the mattress come out too far?

Do you need to replace the plywood platform or could you use a bunkee board?

Thanks for the help.

Have not done it, but measured and in our 30' FC it would make a tight situation even tighter to the point of not being worth it. The bedroom is pretty tight as it is.

I'm thinking those few inches would be a little too much in our 31'. Also it would make it more dificult to reach the drawers underneath.

You would probably have to re-engineer the struts that hold the bed in the up position, too, as the addition length may be too much weight.

I have a full size queen in my '74 Sov. Set up east/west. There is no walking around it. Not even close. I tried setting it up north south to get more room on the sides, but then it touches wall to wall front to back. I built my own frame, because the bed (as well as the floor of the bedroom) was missing when I got her.

I'll try to get a picture of it for you, if you'd like.

I don't know about the space you have, but in our 25' FB, I extended the OEM mattress—I screwed a 1/4" plywood board across the bottom thus extended the mattress stupport, no extra support needed. There's not much weight at the end of the bed.

I moved the mattress down and filled the space at the top with a bolster my wife made. This is the part under the top of the pillows and there's not much weight there either. Now you can use standard queen sheets. I cut a piece of 1/4" plywood and stuffed it into the bottom of the bolster so there would be something hard to fit the sheets around.

This way we added around 4" and our feet are now on, not extended over the end of the bed. We also put a standard queen foam pad on top because the OEM bed was uncomfortable. There isn't much room between the end of the bed and the wall, but we spend a lot more time in bed than we do trying to walk around the end.

Was going to post these last night, but the site locked up on me...

Here's how the queen fit in mine... If the 34 ha me room from the back wall to the bathroom wall, I'd turn it north/south, and not have to climb over the DW to get out of bed in the middle of the night.

I put a regular queen in my '99 34'. I still squeeze around by side/slide stepping. It was a good choice.

Thanks for the replies.

Our trailer will be out of winter storage in four weeks. I will then measure to see how much room I will have to maneuver to get to the side of the bed.

It would be nice to have a regular queen.
